- My ancestor JOHN BRYSON born abt 1764 Ireland...his family is found in area of Ballywee. First wife was MARGARET WILSON b1765- d1809, she is buried at Old Kilbride. ( looking for any info to connect to the correct Wilson family). Their children:
- JAMES ....I am desperatly looking for this son, he remained in Ireland when John moved the family to America in 1830.....but by 1836 the will of John leaves a legacy to "the children of my son James of Ireland, deceased". I am looking for any clue to this son and his family.
- MARGARET (she is my 4x great grandmother)..b1788, she married WILLIAM BARR b 1778. They were married in Ireland and came to Pittsburgh, PA in 1816, 2 children born Ireland - Eleanor b1811 and John B b 1814. I am looking for any info that would give me a connection the the family of Willam Barr.....have always felt that since they married in Ireland surely William Barr did not live all that far from Donegore.
- JANE born 1791 Ballywee, died 1835 buried Old Kilbride...she married James Ferguson(he remarried and brought all of his family to Pittsburgh in 1845)
- MARY....married in Ireland to Robert Warwick
- JOHN.....married in Ireland to Mary Houston
- John Bryson's second wife was Mary McCune, her tombstone here in America says "of County Down".....they had another 7 children and all came to Pittsburgh, PA along with several of the children of his first wife.
- I am looking for any help, suggestions on trying to locate the family that John Bryson belongs to, parents, siblings etc.....since.my connection is thru the BARR family I am also looking for this family as well. I note that William and Margaret used the Barr and Bryson name as a middle name for almost every one of their children.....and one childe was given the middle name of 'CRYMBLE'.....I have always wondered if this could be a name in William Barrs family.
- I apologize for the length of this post, but wanted to give as much info as possible.

Good Afternoon
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.
There are some places where you can search online, however these websites do not have complete collections and many do not cover the period after 1900:
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
http://www.ancestryireland.com/family-records/birth-and-baptism-records…
In relation to the spelling of the surnames mentioned, you are aware, I?m sure that the online sites cater for variations in spelling to a degree.
Other important sources include the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith?s Valuation. Even though these sources only record the head of the household, the information is very important and can be valuable:
Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1837): http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp
Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864): http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
The National Archives of Ireland: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ you can search the 1901/1911 Census on the National Archives page too, for instances of the family name at that time
Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Best of luck with your search

While I technically joined IrelandXO a couple of years ago, I haven't really visited the site until just this week reading an article about it in the Irish Times. So here I am, about 5 years after your post. I hope that you're still monitoring the site.
I also descend from John Bryson, through his son William, by 2nd wife Mary McCune. William was in the large family party which came to the the U.S. via Baltimore in 1830 and went on to Deer Township, Allegheny County, near Pittsburgh.
I recently returned from a research trip to PRONI, and have a few items of interest for John Bryson, such as the 61-year lease that he was in the middle of when he decided to emigrate. But so far I have nothing to push his line back any farther in time.
I also collected a lot of tithe applotment records for Brysons and allied families, but am still in the early stages of analyzing them.
Finally, I obtained a DVD of all the baptism and marriage records for First Donegore Presbyterian, but those records have some untimely gaps, so if they are of use it will be for people in John's FAN club moreso than for John himself.

Hi, my name is Michael Bryson ... my ggfather John Stewart Bryson was adopted into the Edward Bryson family that came to Ontario Canada, just north of Toronto, in 1849 from Campbeltown, Scotland. Edward was born in Ireland around 1800 +/-5, had a sister Catherine (a bit older I believe), and married Catherine Hattan at Southend, Scotland in 1827.
By DNA I am not a Bryson, but my paternal ancestors have carried the name for 167 years. So, I have a complete genealogy of the Bryson family since Edward, but can't find his origin in Ireland.
There's an Ontario death registration for one of my Catherine Brysons with a birthplace in Ireland noted, however it isn't clear whether it is for the unmarried sister Catherine Bryson, or Catherine (Hattan) Bryson. And the birthplace is in handwriting, not printed, so it could be read in a few different ways.
Catherine Hattan was also from Ireland according to the 1827 marriage register.. Edward erected a monument in 1848 at Southend to the memory of her father.
I'm in contact with a John Bryson in Canada, who is a descendant of Edward. As far as I know, the only DNA testing he has done proves only that he is 'not a Stewart'.
I think it's very likely that the Brysons I'm interested in are from the Ballyclare vicinity. Proximity to Southend is one reason. Local frequency of the surname is another.
If any Bryson with deep ancestry around Ballyclare has done one of the more in-depth Family Tree DNA tests, I may be able to persuade John to do the same.
And, I really would appreciate it if anyone knowing of any Edward Brysons, for a generation or two before and after 1800, would reply here.

Hi Michael, As is Jay and Ruth above, I’m related to John W. Bryson (my 4th ggf) who emigrated with his second wife and most of his children from both of his marriages to the Port of Baltimore and West Deer Creek, Allegheny, Pennsylvania in 1830. I’m related through his son William from his second marriage. He emigrated from Ballywee, Northern Ireland which is close to Ballyclare. I’ll check John W’s brother’s records too as that branch married other Bryson branches. Many Brysons are buried at Kilbride Cemetery near Doagh, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It gets very confusing. The cousins still living in Doagh are from John W’s brother. They live on one of the old homesteads. The names you mentioned are not familiar but it is assumed John W’s ancestors came from the area in Scotland that your Edward Bryson is from sometime in the early 1700s. There is also a Bryson branch from Randalstown, Northern Ireland. I’ll look to see if Edward or Catherine are mentioned in some records I have from Scotland. I don’t have any info on emigration by Brysons to Canada before the early to mid 1800s. I’ll let you know what I find. Deb Bryson Martin Virginia USA
