Hi

My ancestor George Robinson married Elizabeth Wightman 9 August 1849. One of their daughters Mary Jane Robinson came with her husband Frederick Smith to New Zealand 1875, George came later as a widow.

Recently I have had contact with a woman who is a DNA match with me at ftdna and her family also comes from Seaford. Her name from that area is SCOTT. To help us find our common ancestor we need to research further back in the records of the area and also to research wider in  our trees in the previous generations.

Can we see those records online somewhere?

Thanks for any suggestions

regards

  • Hi again Coralie

There are 2 records of the marriage on www.rootsireland.ie/

There is a charge to view the records but it will have the parish and HOPEFULLY the groom & bride's parents' names to help you to keep working back.

I was able to check the parish and 1 record is from Loughinisland Presbyterean.

There are 863 birth/baptism records for Scott in Down but none in Loughinisland as far as I can tell.

ancestry.com - also a pay site but can usually be accessed at your local library or family history centre - has lots of public member trees with Scott in county Down

    http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=pubmembertrees&rank=1&new=1&so=3&MSAV=1&msT=1&gss=ms_r_db&gsln=Scott&gskw=Down&gskw_x=1&uidh=diq

Family Search (free0 also has some early Scott records in Down.

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/igi/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3AScott~%20%2Bbirth_place%3ADown~%20%2Bsubcollection_id%3A5&igi=(1%202)

There are also some early records on PRONI.

    Happy hunting!

  • Hi Col

Thankyou for your help. I will get on to it. It's a while since I did my own research, been helping others but no doubt it will all come back to me.

    cheers

  • Coralie,

There are two Presbyterian churches in the Loughinisland area. One at Clough has baptism and marriage records from 1791, the other at Seaforde has records that start in 1826.

Baptisms from 1814 onwards are on-line on the rootsireland site that Col has referred you to. Likewise baptisms for Seaforde from 1826 onwards. However the site does not have any marriages before 1845 nor Clough baptisms 1791 to 1814. So for those, as per the advice I gave for your Strabane ancestors, you?ll need to get someone to look them up in PRONI, or at the Presbyterian Historical Society (who should also have copies).

It?s probably worth mentioning that Presbyterians in Ireland don?t use the parish system. Which church you attend is simply a matter of personal preference (rather than dictated by where you live as is the case with the Roman Catholic church and the Church of Ireland). And so it may not necessarily be the closest church to where you lived.

You might also find Ros Davies' Co Down site helpful:
