Hi. I have just stumbled across your website and wonder if you can help me with my research into my Irish roots.
I have been trying to trace my Irish descendents through my deceased Grandfather Thomas Power for several years with limited success, but felt I had one real breakthrough having obtained his naval record 2 years ago which gives his birth place as New Ross, Wexford.. Since then though I have been unsuccesful with finding a potential birth certificate using any on line sources in order to take me further back, although the Rootschat Wexford forum has provided a lot of useful general information about possible sources of enquiry in New Ross itself. I am coming over to New Ross on the 10th May for a week in an attempt to find out something more. I am not expecting to find anything as the information I have on my Grandfather is very limited, but am looking forward to seeing the place of his birth and enjoying the visit and some irish hospitality in any case. It would be wonderful though if I could discover something.
WHAT I KNOW;
- Thomas Power (family feel possibly Tyrone as a middle name but I have not had any success with this line of enquiry?)
BIRTH: 2 possibilities(feel naval record is correct but not absolutely sure)
- 1.Birth: 10 Oct 1896 (on his Naval record which I feel is the correct one)
- 2. Alternative birth: 7 ? Oct 1902 (on later army record. He would have been too old to enlist if born in 1896 so I think he made himself 5 years younger to enlist?)
- Occupation: Farm Labourer (on naval record)
- Birth Place: New Ross, Wexford (on naval record)
- His fathers Name - also Thomas Power ?(just family hearsay)
I have no information on siblings so doubt I will be able to corroborate any possible matches? Sadly the reason I know so little is my father actually threw all documents and photos away when clearing my Grandmothers house.
I am intendind visiting St Mary's Catholic church in New Ross? Not sure if there is just one? Another suggestion is to visit the registrar of BMD at the health centre New Ross, or the GRO in Roscommon, but I don't think I have enough to go on.? Any possible help you could give me to make the most from my trip would be invaluable to me.

Hello Julie,
It's quite difficult to find your people when you dont have parents names. Did your grandfather marry in Ireland or abroad? Have you looked at the irish census (free online) for 1901 and 1911? There is a Thomas Power from New Ross aged 6years. Depending on when the census was taken this could tie in with your dates.
The good news is that there will be a record of his birth, it's just a matter of sorting out which one is the correct one. Did your father ever mention any aunts or uncles at all? Many children were called after their grandparents. I was going to suggest that you look ast the english census but that one wont be out for a number of years yet 2021. There was no census taken in Ireland in 1921 because of the civil war, so we have to wait for the 1926 census.
Sorry that I can't be of more assistance to you,
Kind regards,
Anne Dennehy

Hi Julie
There is a baptism record of Thomas Power in Wexford 1895 on www.rootsireland.ie/
The parish is Templetown RC; (New Ross is not in the list of parishes)
http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=1&confirmPageView=Y
rootsireland charges to view the full record but it SHOULD have the parents' names.
I'm no expert but from a google check it looks like Templetown comes under New Ross so this looks like it could be your man.

Hi Col
Thanks for your help. Had a look but the dates are not quite right and fathers name is wrong. Thanks anyway for taking the time to look for me. Really appreciate it.

Julie:
There are two RC churches in New Ross: St. Mary and St. Michael and there is also an Augustinian church (according to this Wikipedia summary http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Ross ). I checked the civil birth index records and there were two Thomas Power births registered in New Ross in 1895 and two in 1899 and two in 1901. I listed the 1895 records below and based on your October birth month, the second is more likely. I don't know if you are going to Dublin but the General Register Office can provide you with a copy for around 4 euros. I agree with Anne that the 6 year old in New Ross DED is a good possibility. The census was taken March 31, 1901 which would make him 5 1/2 if born in October 1895 but many times families rounded up the age. Enjoy your trip and we hope you have success.http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Wexford/New_Ross_Rural/Newtown_or_Commons/1798395/

Hi Roger
Thankyou for your help. If my Grandfather was born in 1896 unfortunately this record is too early.! Thankyou for the information re the churches. I am looking forward to my trip but not expecting success in the family history research.
