I am searching for more information on John HYLAND/HILLAN who married Sarah LENNON on 17 May 1862 in St Patrick's Church Roman Catholic Church, Banbridge.  John was married with the surname HILLAN.  John's father was Patrick HYLAND/HILLAN, Farmer.  John's sister, Mary Anne HYLAND/HILLAN was a witness at the wedding.  A son, Patrick was born on 19 April 1863 in Banbridge.  The family migrated to Australia circ 1864-1865.

John HYLAND/HILLAN was born circa 1842, possibly Gargarry/Garvaghy or Duchary/Dooghary, County Down, Ireland.

Sarah LENNON was born circa 1837, Ballygowan, County Down, Ireland.  Father was John LENNON, Farmer.

John and Sarah HYLAND/HILLAN's next born was a daughter Mary in 1864.  Given the Irish tradition Mary could possibly be the name of John's mother.

I would dearly love to find out more of the HYLAND/HILLAN family.  I have been told it may be that the family were from Gargarry Parish of Drumgooland.

Also I would love to find out more about the LENNON family from Ballygowan Parish of Aghaderg.

Thank you sincerely and best wishes from Donna in Australia

  • Dear Donna

I had a quick look at www.rootsireland.ie where there is a baptism record for a John Hillian for 11th August 1837, Newry , Co. Down.  This John?s father was a Patrick Hillian and his mother Rose Burns. Sponsors were Bernard Morgan and Mary O?Hanlon. Do these sponsors names mean anything in your family tree?

I also checked for any other children born to Patrick and Rose and located a Felix, baptised in 1834. A Felix Hillion married in Co. Louth in 1857. This John and Felix may be your Hillian ancestors. If you go to www.rootsirelandie you will be able to locate these records. It is a subscription site, but once you buy the necessary credits you can check these records to see if they are relevant. Also, once you have looked at Felix?s marriage record you can search for any children born to that couple. They may have stayed in Co. Louth or moved elsewhere.

There are no Hallian?s listed on Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864) but there are a number of Hylands, you can have look here and see what you think:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=0&Submit.y=0&Submit=Submit&familyname=Hyland&firstname=&baronyname=&countyname=DOWN&unionname=&parishname=

Most of the Hallian entries around this time seem to be located in Co. Westmeath.

There are no Hallian/Hallion entires on the Tithe Applotment Books for Down (1823-1837) but there is a William Hyland. It would not be easy to link this William to your family however:

You can also use rootsirleand to search for your Lennnon family

You can also check The National Archives of Irelandhttp://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/  to search the 1901/1911 Census for instances of the family name at that time

Let me know what you think

    Best wishes
