My 2x great grandfather joined the Bengal Presedency army ( East India Company) in 1844. His army retirement papers and the annuall muster rolls detail that his parish was Castletown Westmeath.
given his trade as a tanner he may have even come from Kilbeggan as there were Kelly's in the Leather trade in the town through the 1800's and mid 1900's.
he was born about 1822/4 and his father is noted as also being John.
Any help at all to bring the old fella further out of the shadows would be so great fully received.

Hi Clare,
My 2x great grandfather was called John Kelly.
He did well out East, wearing the uniform of the Bengal Army he married and had a family out there, finally resting his bones in Lahore.

Dear Stephen
If you go to www.rootsireland.ie you will be able to search for John?s baptism (if it exists). I had a quick look and there are 46 baptism records for a child, John Kelly between 1820 and 1830 in Co. Westmeath. However, if you limit the search to between 1820 and 1822 there are 7 baptism results. As this is a subscription site, I can only see a certain amount of information. I think it would be a good idea to see if any of these are relevant. Perhaps the sponsors? names on the record will ring a bell.
Let me know how you get on. If we had his mother?s maiden name and/or a parish we may be able to progress things a bit further.
Best of luck with your search
