Looking for any help for any Bilbows from Mayo.  I looked at the 1911 census in Mayo. A Patrick Bilbow came to the United States and settled in Philadelphia. The name of the town is  Ballymackeehola (Rathoma, Mayo) from the census. I am trying to help my wife find her Irish family. Any help would be foreve thankful , Thank you Edward Cavanaugh Sr.

  • Hello Edward,

I looked at the 1911 Irish census and found Patrick aged 10, son of Mary Bilbow (widow).

I then went back to the 1901 census and found Patrick aged o, son of Mary and John Bilbow.

However there seems to be another family of the same name living three doors away.  Patrick Bilbow aged 14, son of Michael Bilbow and Honor.

The fact that the surname is so rare would lead me to believe that they are a related family.  the only question is which Patrick Bilbow is yours.

Patrick born in 1901 to John and Mary    or

Patrick born in 1887 to Michael and Honor???

Michael and Honor do not appear at all in the census for 1911 and I'm wondering if they emigrated as a family sometime after the 1901 census?

Have you any idea at all of the dob of Patrick?  Have you applied for his death certificate over there?  This would hopefully give you an approximate year of birth and you would then know his parents' names.  Once you have his parents names you can search www.rootsireland.ie for a marriage record which would give you the bride and groom's fathers' names.

Please let me know as much as you have and I will do what I can from this end.

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Edward:

if you go to the online irish phonebook http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/#  and enter Bilbow in Co. Mayo, you should get two listings: one in Killala and the other in Ballycastle. The 1911 Bilbow family lived in Ballysakeery civil parish and Killala is the parish just to the north. You may want to contact this family to see if there is a connection.

  • Roger, I tried the website that you listed. I put in the name Bilbow and Co.Mayo put nothing came up.  I tried for about 10min but nothing. I did speak to my wifes cousins todday and was told that his father, Matthew Bilbow was in Ireland about 20 years or so ago. He spoke to a A Lennord Bilbow the first name could be Amila but again not sure. She has a bed and breakfast in Killala and was told the my wifes Uncle Matthew looked so much like some from that town. Well Roger I will try again but as of now cannot find any phone numbers Take care, Edward Cavanaugh

  • Edward:

I'm thinking you may be searching in the business side of the phone book rather than residential. In the upper right hand corner there should be two tabs. Make sure you are on residential. If this does not work send me an e-mail to mcdonn@comcast.net and I will send you the info. I don't want to put individual's phone numbers and addresses on an open forum.

  • Hi Edward, just stumbled over your post so hopefully still active. I and a few friends have been capturing Bilbow family history for a few years now. Our efforts are published on http://bilbow.one-name.net/ . We always welcome contact from Bilbow decendants, so please get in touch and we will probably be able to share some information.
