Hi Everyone

I am trying to research my Irish hertitage.

I never met my Irish grandparents and sadly my mother has also passed away.

My grandfather was John Lane and grandmother was Catherine Lane nee Murphy.

He had agricultural farm land just outside Abbeyfeale and had built a well on the land - the land was inherited by the oldest son who eventually sold it to the Forestry Commission.

My mother was called Catherine Lane (known as Kitty) - born 28th Nov 1921. She came from a large family - Hannah, Nora, Margaret, Ita, Bridget, Michael, Patrick and more I believe.

Can anyone help in tracing any info on them please? I am almost sure there are relatives still living in Abbeyfeale.

Thank you.

Cathy

The only John Lane/Catherine Murphy marriage that I could locate in that time period was a marriage in Dublin in the second quarter of 1919. Is it possible they were married in Dublin? Was your mother the oldest or second oldest child? You may also want to check the online Irish phone book. There are Lanes in the Abbeyfeale area. Make sure you search the residential listings.

  • Roger,

What a great site - thank you for your very quick response.

My mum was second oldest - oldest was son called Michael but don't know when he was born.

Unfortunately I have no idea where John Lane and Catherine Murphy got married or when.

I will try the phone book as you suggested.

    Thanks again

Forgot to add that my father has informed me that he remembers being told that Catherine Murphy came from Newcastle or Newcastle West - if that's any help.

    Regards

Based on the Newcastle information, I went back in and found a 1913 civil marriage index record for a Kate Murphy and one of the possible spouses was a John Lane. Since the marriages almost always occurred in the bride's church, this may be the record. The only question I have is the 8 year gap between 1913 and when the second child was born in 1921. However, maybe your mother was born before 1921. There was no civil birth index record in 1921 for Kate/Kitty/Catherine Lane in Newcastle. There were records in 1915, 1916 and 1917. You can now search civil index records at www.irishgenealogy.ie You can get copies of any civil record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. If you plan to get copies, let me know and I will forward instructions.

  • Hi Catherine. My mother in law based in dublin and has also been researching the Lane family in that area. It would seem you both have a lot of names in common in your search. Please contact me at any time. shellievil@live.ie

  • Hi Cathy,

I too share the same names of grandparents John and Catherine Lane. All the brothers and sisters mentioned I also recognise as being names of my aunties and uncles.

I am interested to know how your search is going as I am also keen to research my family.

    Many thanks,

  • Hi Maria

Can I ask who you are the daughter of please and where you live? I live near Portsmouth, England.  As I said I am the daughter of Catherine Lane who I believe was the second oldest, the oldest child being Michael.

My research isn't going too well as i've never met any relatives in Ireland and Lane is a fairly common surname!

My mum only saw her sisters that lived here in England more so when we were all really young.

Any info we could share would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

  • Hello,

I have also been trying to find information about my family name Lane, my 2rd Great grandfather name was Patrick Lane, some of this family had moved to Australia in the 19th cent.

He had a brother named John Lane, here is some information I have:
When John J Lane was born on August 20, 1877, in Eltham, Victoria, Australia, his father, Patrick, was 25 and his mother, Bridget, was 19. He had six brothers and five sisters. He died in 1926 in Western Australia, Australia, at the age of 49

  • Hi John

I have only just recently taken up my Lane family research again and noticed there was a post from you in 2018! So sorry for long delay in answering but I would be very interested in hearing from you regarding the Lane family.

    Thank you Cathy L

  • Cathy,
There is a birth record for a Michael Lane born 21/6/1915 to John and Catherine (née Murphy) in the Civil records. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/67aa…

The address is given as Caher Hayes which is about a 10 min drive from Abbeyfeale. Google maps shows forestry in the area. Hopefully this might help John Lane (from the Hill), or somebody else local, to place your particular branch of the Lane family.

    Best of luck
