i am seeking help finding information on my grt grandparents micheal farrell and catherine durkin they had quite a few children together and micheal had some from a previous marriage to anne ganly. they lived in rural boyle and were farmers i think the street was called sheegory. i have no info coming up on searching for catherine durkin and very little coming up on micheal farrell. my grandmother winifred was micheal and catherine's daughter born to them on march 9th 1912. i have no idea of where the durkin family came from but i know the farrell's lived in boyle and  micheal's parents were from sligo.

does anyone know about any farms in that area owned by farrell's or where the origin of the durkin family was?

be happy and most grateful of any info if anyone knows of any

thankyou

L :)

The townland is Sheegorey in Boyle civil parish. Sheegorey is about 5 kilometers north of Boyle town on the N61.

I located the 1901 and 1911 census records for the family and also located the likely 1905 civil death index record for Anne. I will look for the two Michael Farrell marriage records and see if I can find where the Durkins came from. The 1911 census says she was born in Roscommon. Note: I think they made a mistake on the census form. Catherine was not married for 12 years to Michael and only the youngest two children were hers.

I located the 1897 civil marriage index record for Michael Farrell and Anne Ganley/Ganly. I was not able to locate the record for Michael and Catherine Durkin. I also checked variants like Durkan and Durcan. You can get a copy of the 1897 record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1897. You already know the first name of Anne's mother from the 1901 census. if you plan to get a copy let me know and I will forward instructions.

Kilmore parish Mayo  is not near Sheegorey townland. Kilmore is the most northwest parish in Co. Mayo. I don't think this is your Catherine.

I think you should stick to Durkin, Durkan or Durcan in looking for Catherine.

I found five other children likely born to Michael and Catherine.

    Norah  May 14, 1913

    Michael  June 27 1916

    Patrick September 9 1917

    Christina November 8 1918

    Johanna December 25 1919

I did some more searching and came up with a possible civil marriage index record in the Swinford registration district which is almost entirely in East Mayo. Not sure if this is the correct record. Early 1909 fits with the 1911 census data. You can get a copy of this record for around 4 euros from the General Register Office. The record would show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they were living in 1909. Here are instructions to get a copy. Only ask for a copy not a cert.

  • thank you so much for all yr help yes i recognise the names or my grt aunts and grt uncle above thank you

woudl they miss spell names then so much?  i guess if the handwriting was bad you wouldn't know .  i found the swinford one on ancestry as well it woudl seem to be linked to teh same catherine durkin i showed you earlier whose father was micheal durkin but i don't know if i am on the same track here so i am going to double check that one as i remember the name swinford :)

    thank you

I looked closer at the census record and see that Michael Durkin lived in Kilmovee parish not Kilmore Kilmovee is within the Swinford registration district so I think you are on the right track.
