Here is the information I currently have on my great great grandmother, Catherine Meehan:

She was born in County Cork, Bally me Philip, Ireland, the daughter of John and Ellen Leonard Meehan and baptized July 11, 1827 in the parish of Castletownroche, Diocese of Cloyne by Rev. J O'Dwyer, sponsors – John O'Connell and Kate Hickey. She came to America in the year 1833 with her parents and their other children.

I would like to find out the names of their other children, and information about the genealogy of John and Ellen Meehan if possible.

Thanks!

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie  has records for the RC parish of Castletownroche back to 1810. I located the baptismal record for Catherine in 1827. There were five other baptismal records where the father was John Meehan and the mother was Ellen Leonard. I could not verify that the records were in Castletownroche because Roots requires a first name for the child when you search the indexes for records in a particular parish.

Roots is a pay site to view the transcription of a church record. Possibly you can also locate the marriage record for John and Ellen.

  • The Castletownroche name may be Mehigan, not Meehan. My grandparents John Joseph Mehigan and Elizabeth Bushe are from Castletownroche. In 1690 Christopher the O'Meighan from Ballaghmeehan (now Rossinver) in County Leitrim, an officer in the army of James II, was killed at the Battle of the Boyne. His two oldest sons went to France. His wife, Margarita O'Reilly and their three youngest sons went to a farm called Kilcoran, a few miles west of Cahir in County Tipperary, just over the mountains from Castletownroche.. The son of one of those who went to France, Guillaume Alexander de Mehegan was a political activist and writer who spent some time in the Bastille. On his death in 1766 his wife Charlotte Therese Boitel and their infant son Jean Joseph joined the rest of the family in Kilcoran. Records are not available from then until shortly after 1800 when I find Jean Joseph's som Robert in Ballygrillihan townland, Castletownroche. The family name used by Margarita and her Kilcoran descendants was Meehan. Indeed Kilcoran remained owned by Meehans until the 1980s. I would suggest posting a query on Meehan-L@rootsweb.com which is managed by Ted Meehan a direct descendant of one of Margarita's children.I'm in the process of writing a family history of my line I'd be happy to email you in pieces or send me your address and I can mail you a disc with the .pdf files. My email is remeehan@mindspring.com.

Bob Meehan (name morphed from Mehigan after the 1900 US census. Indeed my father's Cambridge birth record shows Meehan, but his baptism record shoes Mehigan)
