My ancestor Nicholas Power was born in Drogheda in Louth, but I can't find Parish Drogheda in Louth!  What parish should I be looking in?

  • The town of Drogheda was divided between counties Meath & Louth.

If your Powers were Catholic then the main Catholic parishes for the town were St. Mary's and St. Peter's, and there were other parishes covering the outskirts of the town.

St. Mary's covered the southern parts of the town, mostly in Co. Meath, some part of the town north of the Boyne also.

  • Cynthia:

I think the two parishes in Drogheda are St. Peters and St. Marys. We do not have a page for St. Marys but we do  have a page for St. Peters. The parish liaison for that parish is very active. I would post in that parish and I'm sure you will get a reply.

I didn't know the year of birth for Nicholas but I took a quick look at Roots Ireland. www.rootsireland.ie

Roots is  apay site to view transcriptions of church records.

They only had one baptismal record for a Nicholas Power. It was in 1871 in the Darver RC records. Darver is a good deal to the north of Drogheda.

  • Mr McDonnell,

I am shocked that I did not see your reply to my post sooner.  Somehow I just kept missing it.

Our Nicholas Power was born in 1622 and emigrated to Providence, Rhode Island, Colonial America in 1640.  Some of the genealogy trees on Ancestry.com list his parents as Joseph Power (1594-1661) and Angelina Romo Power (1600-1642), but I've learned not to trust the information on the trees until I have verified it for myself! Joseph, and perhaps Angelina, supposedly emigrated to America with Nicholas.

Thank you so much for your hejpful suggestions.
