Alexander McCabe arrived in Australia as a Convict  in 1793 on the Ship the Boddingtons. The Boddingtons departed Cork Ireland on the 15th February 1793 and arrived in Port Jackson, Sydney , NSW, Australia on the 7th August 1793. Alexander was transported for Life at County Louth Ireland in 1792. No details of his Trial have been found.I think he was born in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland.

In 1793 it is stated that his occupation is as a 'Landholder'.

I can't find any information about Alexander McCabe in Ireland , his Birth or Baptism, or Family Members or anything else about him. Why is there no information about his Trial?

I am hoping to contact other descendants of Alexander McCabe who live in Ireland. There are quite a lot of us in  Australia.

Thank you

Sandy ( Aussie McCabes )

  • Researching in Ireland in the 1700s is notoriously difficult. There are very few records to consult. Fmp have some trial records but the chances are that they don?t go back that far. It?s possible that the trial might have been reported in a  newspaper, but otherwise there may not be any documentation to find.

You don?t say what denomination he was.  If he was RC, then the Dundalk parish records only start in 1790. If Church of Ireland, they start in 1729. The COI records don?t appear to be on-line anywhere, but there is a copy in PRONI in Belfast. A personal visit is generally required to access them.

  • Thank you so much for your reply.  I can see a trip to Ireland will be the solution to completing my research for Alexander McCabe.

A personal visit to Kapunda  in South Australia and Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, UK, proved successful in helping me find a Birth  record and a Headstone and Grave so let's hope when I eventually get to Ireland it will be just as successful.

I will have other research for other Ancestors in Ireland I could do as well.  My brother and his wife and children are all keen to go to Ireland. We have been trying to find whether the McCabes all get together.

I can't find a Birth for Margaret Keane born about 1865 in Cappaquin, Waterford, Ireland. She is Alexander McCabe's grandson's wife.   I have her Marriage and Death Certificates but can't find her Birth on any Family History website.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply.

  • Hi

the McCabe name is associated with Monaghan which is beside North Louth. You could contact the local authority here http://www.louthcoco.ie/en/Services/Library/Genealogy-Research-Sources/

there may be a nominal fee involved.

also a great site for Louth this site is very good http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com

for that period I understand the records can be sourced in both Northern Ireland, Belfast and the Republic of Ireland in Dublin. The national library http://www.nli.ie and the National Archives of Ireland

http://www.nationalarchives.ie so you can plan your trip. Also if Church of Ireland (official Protestant Church) is here. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

  • Regarding Margaret Keane born ?about 1865?, birth registration only started in Ireland in 1864. So if born before that you won?t find a birth certificate in the stat records. And in the early years of stat registration not every birth was registered either. In which case you should try parish records. Cappoquin RC records start in 1819. There?s a copy in the National Library in Dublin and they are also on the rootsireland site (pay to view).

  • Thank you so much for your help.

it is the same in Australia. I could not find a Birth for a Catholic Relative. His Birth was not registered with Births , Deaths and Marriages. We took a trip over to South Australia from New South Wales and went to the SA Family History Society and a Member there helped me find Catholic Birth and Baptism records stored in steel draws there.  I could not understand why they had not been given to the SA government.

I now know where to look for Margatet Kean's  Birth or Baptism in Cappoquin , thanks to you.

    thank you again

  • Thank you Pat for all that very valuable information.

That will keep me busy for a while.  This is the whole point to Researching when one is a novice, it is knowing 'where' to look for information especially in another country.

    Thank you so much.

    regards

I'm wondering if you are still searching for info on Alexander McCabe? I have a copy of a marriage record for an Alexander McCabe who married a Mary Ebbit in the Catholic church in Dunleer, Co. Louth. Dunleer is about 10 - 15 miles south of Dundalk. There is also a story of an Alexander McCabe who was arrested and tried in 1794. I don't know if any of this is related to your guy, or not. Trial info from http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/louth_assizes_1793-99.htm

I have also come across some McCabes in Omaha, Nebraska, USA, that are related to an Alexander McCabe. The Nebraska Alexander apparently married a woman while living in the U.S. state of Washington. The U.S. state of Washington is on the West Coast of the U.S. Do you know if any of your McCabes of Australia migrated to the U.S.?

Anyway, if you see this and would like to follow up, let me know.
