I have just had confirmation from the GRO that the mother's name on my grandmother's birth certificate she had sent over from Ireland in the 1940s should have read Galwey and not Halvey.  Can anyone help me find a marriage for a Ellen Galwey and Thomas Murphy.  They were on the 1901 census as being 65 and 72 and living in Graigue, Kildorrery.  My grandmother, Mary Murphy, was born in Graigue in 1874 - father's name Thomas Murphy and mother was Ellen Galwey.

  • Do you know if there were other children besides their daughter Mary - if so were they older or younger ?

this might help narrow down the timeframe for a possible marriage..

  • there are extracted Civil births for two elder children to Thomas & Ellen - which I'll include for reference :

    Richard 1868
    Thomas 1871
    (Mary 1874)

Ellen's surname is shown as Galway on the records for the two sons

Registration district for the eldest located so far (Richard) is Mitchelstown.

1868 gives just a four year window for a civil marriage, assuming they were RC, if there were any earlier children that could push the marriage back before the start of civil records.

  • Hello Shane,

Thank you very much.  Going by the 1901 census, and assuming I have the right Thomas and Ellen in Graigue, Ellen was born about 1836.  Family rumour is that Mary was the second youngest.  The names given to us before my parents died were:  Dennis, Maurice, Ellen, Bridget, Thomas, Mary (my gran) and Margaret and that the 4 eldest went to the USA.

Another researcher has given me a list of baptisms for St Bartholomews Church, Kildorrery and the list is identical, except the two eldest boys (Dennis and Maurice) are missing, Marys baptism month is the same month in 1874, parents Thomas Murphy and Ellen Gallagher, address Graigue, Kildorrery.  [Perhaps  Gallagher is another transciption error.]  Bridget was baptised in 1868 (the year you found for Richard) but Thomas is the same as your Thomas, i.e. 1871.

(Mary's birth was registered:  District : Kildorrery;  District of: Mitchelstown;  County: Cork, which fits in with your Richard.)

    Kind regards,

    Pat

  • Nothing promising for a marriage of Ellen Galwey/Galway and Thomas Murphy. in civil records between 1864 and 1868, the only one that's even remotely close geographically is an Ellen Galway in Killarney district in 1865, but this has no cross-matching Thomas Murphy.

There are no Thomas Murphy marriages listed in Mitchelstown district between these years either. Widening the search area for him would be difficult due to the number of Murphys.

There is a marriage on the IrishGenealogy website, which covers Kerry and parts of West Co. Cork of a Helen Gallwey in 1865, but the groom's name is Bartholomew Daly. RootsIreland (pay-website) is showing about six Ellen Galway marriages in North East Co. Cork, but just one after the 1830s and that's to a Daniel Murphy in 1861.

It's possible that a church marriage may not among those online, or there was a mistake in recording in the register, or that the parish where they married doesn't have records for the time they married - e.g. missing or damaged pages etc

  • Hi Shane,

Thank you so very much for looking for me.  Hopefully, something will turn up.  It could be the name on the original birth certificate was wrong and should have been Gallagher or Galloway.  This is proving even harder than I thought!

Thank you again for your time -

    Pat

  • Told your kids that it will fulfill you truly on the off chance that they come clean. Children like to fulfill their guardians, so once in a while you can utilize this further bolstering your good fortune. Numerous folks start by imparting basic stories, for example, the legend of George Washington and the celebrated cherry tree. You can likewise utilize stories that are identified with your own particular life to demonstrate your youngsters the estimation of trustworthiness. On the off chance that you have more seasoned youngsters you can tell them how their falsehoods make you feel. To do this, take them some place that is private, portray what befell them and why you don't imagine that they let you know reality and afterward say something along the lines of "when you lie, I feel disillusioned in you.".For this more info i suggest you this college paper writing help website . It gives you all type of necessary info thanks
