My husband and I are going to be in N. Ireland June 2015. My husbands g-g-g-grandmother and grandmother came from the Lisburn area. I have a copy of their marriage certificate dated 11 August 1849 Broomhedge.

Alexander Dunbar married Esther (Essie) Hull 11 August 1849 in Broomhedge. Alexander was from Blaris Parish.

Esther Hull was born 18 October 1829 or 1830. Her father was William Hull from Magheramesk Parish and her mother was Ellen McDonel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Brenda,

I have some information regarding your Alexander Dunbar.  The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) has the last will and testament of Alexander Dunbar available for viewing online (for free) at the following link: http://apps.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar_IE/WillsSearchImage.aspx?id=165247

I'm aware of the will because I have been researching my 3rd Great Grandfather, James Dunbar, who was specifically mentioned in Alexander's will as the receipient of his house and property.  Alexander, like his nephew, was a weaver by occupation and he died on the 26 November 1871.  The will says he was from the Townland of Gortnacor, and the Parish of Lisburn.

I have more information about the descendants of James Dunbar if you are interested.  They appear to have stayed close to the Broomhedge area and some of them are buried at St. Matthew's church.  I have Dunbar relatives still living in Belfast today.

Do you happen to know who the parents of Alexander might have been?  I have been trying to learn who the parents of James Dunbar were, but so far the closest I have come is making the connection to his uncle Alexander.

Hope you guys had a great trip and hope this is helpful,

    Chris

  • Sorry Brenda...I may have spoken too soon.  I just checked the marriage record for Alexander Dunbar and Esther Hull and it looks like your Alexander was born about 1827...the Alexander Dunbar in the will I mentioned would have been born about 1798.  The townland of Gortnacor isn't very big, and given they have the same name I would think they were certainly related.  If he was a son, it's interesting that James was mentioned in the will and not the younger Alexander.  Without the census records from that time it's hard to untangle some of the relationships.  Hope I haven't thoroughly confused you:)
