Hi, I am looking for any information I can obtain on my ancestors. My Great Great Grandfather Robert Monks born about 1800 was married to Bridgit Field born June 2, 1880. Their son my Great Grandfather Richard Monks born 1836 married Catherine Harford born abt. 1844 were married on May 22, 1861. They hail from Rush and they belonged to St. Maur R.C. Church. I would love to have information on any relations of Monks, Field, Brien and Harford.

  • I have some Monk/Monks ancestors from the same timeframe and parish, I'll check through my notes to see if I've come across your Richard and his parents in my research.

  • got your message ok - I've found no direct connection between our two Monks families, but have further notes of my searches of the Rush/Holmpatrick/Lusk area to go through to see if I spotted your Richard and family.

My earliest confirmed record for this surname is a marriage in 1803 between surnames Rooney and Monks, and I've also a seperate Monks line in the same area with a child born 1815 to a Michael Monks with wife Elizabeth. Unfortunatly no sign of their marriage in the parishes I checked and no maiden name on the baptism..

Dont think I've seen the surname Harford as a witness or godparent on any of my family, but will check...

  • Dont know if you have these already, but will include just in case not...

Marriage of Robert Monk and Bridget Field - 1822
Their children include - Alice 1823, Catherine 1825, Ann 1828, Mary Anne 1830, and Patrick 1840

    (all Rush RC)

Have you seen an image of the original baptism for your Richard - e.g. on microfilm ?
His father's name is matching John for me on RootsIreland searches - the other details match ok, parish, surnames and mother's first name.

Based on Griffth's valuation it look like your Robert may have held a house and Garden and several small plots of land in Rush townland, all leased from Sir. Robert Palmer who appears as a landlord frequently for this area. One of the entries dated 1847 shows a Robert Monks occupying a house and garden, on part of plot number 170. The location seems to be between the Whitestown and Channel roads just west of the town, see : here  (1st edition OSI map c1837 so a little earlier than the date for that Griffith's).

You can search the Valuations on the LibraryIreland website on AskAboutIreland, the site includes transcripts, images of the published valuation books and maps with plot number, although the version they use date from later than the valuation, so dont always match the plot numbers used.

  • Thank you so much for the information. I have a distant relative who lives in Rush and he was able to give me some of the family information. When he did provide the information he did not give me the birth information for the girls, so thank you for that. I was told that there was a daughter named Sarah but you didn't provide any information on her. I guess there weren't any records of her birth or death. As you mentioned you did come across a birth registered for my G.Granfather Richard but the Father was listed as John but the correct mother's name. I did also look up Patrick and it does have Robert. Maybe his name was Robert John or John Robert?  Someone I have come across has a relative named Andrew Monks and she believes his father name was John. I believe the same is true for Robert and we are basing this on the Irish naming order. I figured tha her Andrew might be the brother of Robert but who knows. I have learned that there are lots of Richards, Robert, Patricks and Johns.I did look at the Griffiths and I saw a Robert mentioned a lot. Is this the same man and I saw in one plot that he was sharing it with a John would he have been a relatin?

I have been trying to sign up for the Cork City Parish but it said it was a closed group. Do you have any idea how I can gather information  for that area? My other Irish relations hail from the CIty of Cork. Thank you so much for your help. I would never have found out any of this with out you.
