Hello Gortroe,
I'm looking for help with my father's mother's family. Helena Bailey baptized 30 Jul 1896 in Midleton's St John the Baptist. Her parents were Patrick O'Connell and Mary Cronin.
On religious docs like her baptism and marriage (also Midleton but at Holy Rosary) she is listed as O'Connell. But on "civil" docs, like the 1901 census, they are known as Bailey:
(Residents of a house 7 in Knocklenagroagh (Gortroe, Cork) and both of her parents are listed.
and likewise on the 1911 census:
(Residents of a house 2 in Churchtown (Middleton Rural, Cork)
Her mother died between the two census and her father died shortly after the 1911 census. He was Patrick Bailey aka O'Connell married to Mary Cronin - I have their wedding date as 14 Feb 1874. They were both born around 1850. I have nothing more for his family. I have a little more for her family. Her parents, Patrick Cronin and Elizabeth Riordan, were from Ladysbridge.
My father, born in Midleton in 1923 (he lived there until 1948) was very familiar with them - he was even called "Little Patsy Bailey" by other people in town, but no one was even sure of the name discrepancy. I found the "Special Report on surnames in Ireland..." published 1901 which listed Bailey and O'Connell as the same name. Which helped. When my grandmother's family came to the US they decided to use Bailey.
Thank you for your time,
SallyO

Sally:
Below is the likely civil marriage index record for the 1874 marriage. I looked at all 6 1874 Mary Cronin marriages and this record came closest to Bailey O'Connell. You can get a copy of the marriage record for around 4 euros from the General Register Office. The record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1874.
If you are interested in getting a copy, let me know and I will forward instructions.

I believe we must be "cousins". My great grandparents were Patrick O'Connell and Mary Cronin. Over the years, I was told a totally different story regarding the name O'Connell to Bailey. If you still are active on this site, pls reply Laurene
