Hi Tom
I have continued my reasearching into the above families.
I am looking for the ancestors of John O'Donnell who married Bridget Franklin in St Mary's Chapel Cahir September 5th 1875. On the marriage certificate the father of the Groom (John O'Donnell) and not Martin as I original thought. As I said before all I have to go on is the names of this one family (mother / father and children)
I did find a John Donnell baptised June 1850 - Father John Donnell and Mother M. Tobin
The Sponsors are John Casey and M Ahearn - Priest Step M. Lonergan
register states the family name is O'Donnell
On the 1911 census there is a William Tobin - Boarder - age 57 RC living with The O'Donnell family in Upperabbey Caher. Could this be a relative of M Tobin Mother of John Bapt/ 1850 and could it be the family I have been searching for.
I would appreciate your opinion
Regards
Doreen

Hello Doreen, I am looking at unanswered queries and see you address a Tom, as you did not continue the original thread he would not be notified of this posting and may not have seen it.
The "O" in a name is a movable feast, it is in and out of my own name as I go back, apparently it was dying out and only 5% of names had kept it to famine times but there was a rise in nationalism after the famine and Fenian rebellion of 1861 etc So rule nothing out for the lack or inclusion of the "O".
I had a look at Griffiths Valuation and see a few Tobins in Caher, however there is an Ellen Tobin who appears to own a lot of land and also an address as Tobins Lane. https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=name… There are 6 Donnell entries and 51 under O'Donnell and a few Johns' could be the same person but unlikely.
I located the baptism you mention and looked for siblings but the 3 I found were to a mother Johanna and Judith, there are also a number of marriages of a Donnell etc to a Tobin in |Tipperary but only the one baptism with a mother M Tobin, in 1850 as you state so it likely there is no other sibling, possible mother died, and he married a sister but only two marriages I looked at were in 1844 to a Johanna and in 1855 to a Judith but as I say a number of other marriages of a Donnell to a Tobin in this time so the Tobin in the census could be any of them.
As the query is so old I am not listing all the marriages etc but if you are still interested let me know. Here is a site that shows the various parishes, the 1844 marriage is in Ballylooby next to Caher or Cahir and marriage usually in brides parish.
