On his marriage certificate, Michael Flanagan my grandfather's address was Lisapooka in the parish of Leitrim Co Galway. I have searched for Lisapooka {another spelling was Lisaphuka] , without any success. Does anyone know exactly where it is ?

Many thanks, Pauline

  • Lissaphuca townland consists of just over 194 acres, and is in Kilmeen civil parish, Co. Galway. I'll locate it on the historic OSI and modern maps and post a link..

  • Lissaphuca townland, Co. Galway* is located about 7km (~4.5 miles) east of the town of Loughrea - see :

Loughrea to Lissaphuca (Google map directions)
Lissaphuca townland (1st edition OSI map c1837)
Entry for Lissaphuca on the Placname database (logainm.ie)

(* there's also at least one Lissaphuca townland in Co. Roscommon)

edit : The parish reference you have is likely from a Catholic baptism or marriage, as Kilmeen civil parish is one of the three civil parishes included in Leitrim RC Parish.

  • Many thanks for this info Shane. There is another thing puzzling me and maybe someone can help?

My grandfathers family -Flanagan's ,address and ' homeplace ' was always Rafarn. Why would he put Lissaphuka as his address on his marriage cert ? His sister also did ? I now know that the townlands are nearby, but can anyone offer an explanation ?

    Many thanks,  Pauline

  • The townland of Rafarn is adjacent to Lissaphuca. The register would have been filled in by the priest, who might have assumed they lived in Rafarn townland, or maybe their house/property was close to the border of the two townlands and he was unsure.
