I am searching for a Thomas Emmet or a Thomas John Emmet or a John Emmet from Killmollock. The actual parish is unclear.

He married a Maria or Mary Margaret O'Sullivan or Sullivan.  From David's death record, the parish could be Ballengan, Ballgaddy  or other like sounding parish.  ThisThomas/John ancestor had 2 sons, John and David T. Emmet who immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1860's, ulitmately ending up in Chicago Illinois.

  • Judith:

I think the civil parish you are loking for is Ballingaddy which is just to the south of Kilmallock. The civil parish for Kilmallock is St. Peter and Paul.

I checked on www.askaboutireland.ie for the 1850 Griffiths Valuation for Co. Limerick. I found a Thomas Emmett in Portauns townland in St. Peter and Paul parish. Possibly this is your ancestor.

I also went on Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie  I located an 1848 baptismal record for a David Emmett parents Thomas Emmett and MA Sullivan. The baptism was in the RC church of Effin and Garranderk. The civil parish of Effin is just to the west of Ballingaddy. These parishes are in south central Co. Limerick.

Let me know if you have questions.

Roots by the way, is a pay site and they now ask you to obtain a subscription to view their transcriptions of church records.

  • Thank you John for your quick reply and correction!  My misspelling, for which I apologize, was taken 'in literium' from the David Emmet(t) Chicago death Certificate.  His marriage license has his last name spelled both EMMETT on one line and EMMET on another. Now what should I do?? The location of David's birth is listed as 'Ballingan'. This is getting worse, isn't it? Happy Day to you.

  • Thank you so very much Roger for the very specific suggestions and insights.  They help a foreign researcher so much.  I have in the past, checked Griffiths Valuation through Ancestry.com and located the Thomas Emmett you speak of.  But it holds little genealogical help other than verify location.  However, the www.rootsireland.ie holds a lot of promise and is a Godsend answer. Effin Parish is new to me and is also a great plus and important link.

I posted the 'Ballinngan' source because that is literally what is recorded on this David, as the Killmolock/Killmallock misspelling on Chicago death certificate by his son also named David.

Now, how is payment exchange made for the Baptismal record? I have never ordered records from Ireland and need to learn this.

    Again, Thank you!

  • Judith:

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie is a pay site. They now require you to obtain a subscription (one month or longer) to view the transcriptions of church records. You need to go to their site, register and pay their fee ( I assume via credit card).

The other option is to contact the church directly and see if they would send you a baptismal record (but you would want to give them a donation for their efforts).

  • My name is Michael Emmett and my grandfather Thomas Emmet  was the son of the Robert Emmet that you speak of in your post.  I have several documents concerning the census that you might be interested in.  Also, in the late 1990s my father Robert travel to Ireland and was able to find the home in Ballynagoul  where his father Thomas lived with the Robert Emmet you speak of in your post.  I hope that you will see this reply to your post and that you will reach out to me as I am interested in connecting some more dots.

  • I just realized you were referencing David Emmet who was most likely the brother of my great-grandfather Robert Emmet.
