Nora Murphy wasn't a family member but my mum (Irma Syddall now 83 years old) is trying to trace any family of Nora Murphy.  Unfortunately she has very little information but what she has is

Nora Murphy was her lodger in the mid 1950’s. At that time Nora was about 20 years old. She came from Cork (not sure if this was Cork City or County Cork).  She lived with us in Grafton Street, Bolton, Lancashire and worked in Openshaw’s Cotton Mill.

Nora then moved to London where her cousin worked at The Cumberland Hotel.  We moved house in 1960 and subsequently lost touch.

I know this is not much to go on but we’ve tried other ways of tracing her without success. 

The only other thing I know about Nora (and it’s no small thing) is that she saved my life when I was about  4 years old in 1956 by turning me upsidedown when I was choking.

If any of this means anything to anyone we’d love to hear from you.

    Hi Norma,

    As Nora might well still be alive this is not an easy task, even more because her name is very common in Ireland,  We from Ireland Reaching Out are not really set up for these kind of requests we are a genealogical organisation .

    If Nora worked in the Cumberland Hotel in London and stayed there for a good bit they might know something I suggest to give them a call, you''ll never know if she worked there till her pension age.

  • Thank you so much Annemarie for taking the time and trouble to give this some thought for us. I knew it was a very long shot but as mum keeps saying she really wishes that she knew what happened to Nora I thought I'd give it a go.  I had thought of putting an ad in the Irish Post but I'll take your very good advice and contact The Cumberland.  Although it was her cousin who worked there he may very well have got her a job.

    All the very best to you and Ireland Reaching Out for the fantastic job you all do.  You have already reunited me with a long lost family member as we were both trying to learn about our Great Grandmother Catherine Langan from Ballymote. Keep up your wonderful work

    Norma, a little write up in a London paper might be a good idea too, just in case she did not return to Ireland, it is of course also possible she married in London or elswhere in the UK.

    But just in case she did return to Cork you can email me a little write up with as much details as possible about Nora, like estimated birth year (1930) where she came to stay (the address at the time) and everything else you can think of even how she looked. Create a little write up and I will have it placed in a newspaper called ''the Corkman'' a well read newspaper all over Cork

  • Dear Anne Marie - you are so very kind.  I've asked mum to trawl her memory (which is thankfully excellent even though she is 83) and over the weekend I'll write everything down and email it to you. Any cost invoved I will obviously be more than happy to pay.

    We know that the odds of finding Nora or her children - if she had any - are very long but I'd like to try for mum.
