Francis Hanley,bc1810, arrested in Roosky, tried in Roscommon with Francis Dalton, transported to Australia 1838. In 1849 m Jane Hogan who emigrated to Australia in 1848, as an Irish Orphan in the Earl Grey scheme. Don't know details of Francis' parentage but childrens names may be a clue - Catherine, Michael (my g-g-grandfather), Jane, Daniel, Francis (d soon after birth buried with mother in Nundle, NSW).  Jane's parents were Daniel and Jane.  Perhaps Francis' parents were Catherine and Michael.  Researching in the NA in Dublin, I obtained a copy of the petition organised by Father Brian McDermott on behalf of Francis Hanley and Francis Dalton.  I was also referred to the Outrage Papers by a senior researcher at the Archives where I found amazing correspondence related to Hanley and Dalton.  An article I wrote about this discovery was published in the BBFHS journal, The Endeavour.  To my astonishment, I was contacted by Anne O'Grady, a member of my Society and fellow volunteer at our research centre and g-g-granddaughter of Francis Dalton.  She had no knowledge of my discoveries and we now regard ourselves as 'almost cousins'.

  • Colleen:

I checked the Roots Ireland indexes and found an 1817 baptismal record for a Francis Hanley in the Elphin RC church. Parents were Patrick and Catherine.

As you probably know, many RC churches in Co. Roscommon.do not have records back to the 1810-1820 period.

Do you think 1817 is too late and that this record is for a different Francis Hanley?
