Im looking for info re Kinkades who were listed as residing in the Seeharan area from at least 1824-49.

KINKADE, William Alexander b1821

His father is listed as Moses Kinkade and given that I've found Moses and Williams residing in Seeharan, I've focused my research in this area. William was married in 1847 to Rachael IRWIN (b1827) in Killinkere. At the time Racheal was living in Togher. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I was able to locate the 1821 census record for the family in Seeharan. Surname was spelled Kinkate. William was shown as age 5 which would give him an 1816 year of birth.

The 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows two kinkaid entries: Alexander  and James.

  • Hi Roger,

Thanks for your reply.  I was aware of both of these records as they're online but thank you for looking nonetheless.  Kinkade has so many crazy spellings that I'm not surprised at all to see Kinkate :-)

On William's marriage cert in 1847 he was aged 26 (b1821 and this was reiterated in a passenger list when he came to Australia) and it said he was residing in 'Seeharn' and his father was Moses Kincaid.

Do you think Seeharn is just a variation on Seeharan or could that be a different place?  Is there a 'Togher' nearby as well?  Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Regards,

    Justine

  • Justine:

Seeharan and Togher are 5.6 kilometers apart. There are three Toghers in Co. Cavan but the one in Killinkere civil parish is the one close to Seeharan.

I think Seeharan and Seeharn are the same.

I would value the 1821 census age for William over the marriage record and ship record.

  • Thanks Roger.  Thats great to know (about Togher).

I would very much like to have your confidence and just take the 1821 census as being him but I'd still like to do some work to substantiate that claim. I've been working on eliminating each family member but just getting past the number of Moses Kinkade/Kinkead/Kincade's birth, death and marriages is a task in itself!  Thank you once again for your reply.

    Regards,

    Justine

  • Hi Justine ,

My family are  "Seeharn farm" decendants.

Note:  I know that some of the recent  generation of   Seeharn  family  decendants  use  the  "Kincaid"  spelling but  the current  farm encombant at Seeharn, Mullagh  uses the "Kinkade"  format. Not sure what spelling the line who emigrated  might have used.  Anyway if you are Seeharn connected , I guess we are connected .  Drop  a private  email  sometime.   gmkmills@gmail.com

  • In regard to the above postings by Justine, she recently contacted me as a result of a DNA match. From what I can determine the match relates to the Irwin family, Rachel Irwin who married William Kinkade. This is supposition on my part but I believe Rachel (b. 1827-1829) is possibly the sister to my John Irwin (b. abt 1827). My John Irwin appears first in the US census in 1850 in Texas and he is in the military serving at Fort Inge in Texas. I know nothing more about him before his military enlistment in 1849. The military enlistment records indicate his birth in Cavan Ireland. Nothing more. If anyone can provide additional insight to this Irwin family, it would be greatly appreciated.  Regards to all.

  • Hi Glynn - I have only just seen your reply!   I cant beleive I missed it.  Thankfully I caught Pam's post which alerted me to yours. My G-G-G-Grandfather used Kinkade spelling.  I'll send you an email later today with what I know about them and hopefully we can locate a link.  Thank you!

Pam, its also possible that Rachel and John are cousins and that the common ancestor we share is their parents or grandparents or even (god forbid as we'll never trace them) grandparents. I'll chat with more via gmail about it :-)
