Hi everyone,

Looking for death records and marriage record for family and maybe some property information.  Ellen Doonan supposedly died in childbirth with twins who passed away not too long after.  I am looking for some record of this.

Also, I know the property was left to the oldest son John, and then his son.  I would like to know exactly where this house was/is today.  Any help or clarification would be great!!

According to the 1901/1911 census, the family lived:

County: Fermanagh

Parliamentary Division:  Fermanagh

Poor Law Union: Irvinestown

Subdistrict: Pettigo

Towland/Division: Inisclin

Parish: Drumkeeran

Family name:

John Woods - born around 1940's

Wife:  Ellen Doonan Woods - died between 1890-1901

Kids:  John, Bernard, Mary Ellen, Margaret, Annie

The couple married in 1874. Here is the civil marriage index record.

    First name(s) John
    Last name Woods
    Registration year 1874
    Registered Quarter/Year 1874
    Registration district Irvinestown

I located three possible John Woods civil death index records. One for 1906 (born 1826), one for 1907 (born 1832) and the last for 1910 (born 1832).  Any idea which one is correct?

The civil death index record for Ellen is more problematic. You have her dying between 1890-1901. The only record I could find was an Ellen born 1850 and died 1904. I will also note that the 1901 census record shows that John was married not a widower. Sometimes the family showed married even though the spouse was dead.

    Let me know your thoughts.

  • The revaluation records show John Woods on plot 6 in Inisclin. That was a farmhouse, outbuildings and 39 acres. It remains in his name till 1913 when it changes to ?reps of? indicating he died around that time.  So you are probably looking for a death around 1910 ? 1913. Griffiths clerks often took a year or two to pick up changes of occupant.

John?s estate also acquired plot 7 in 1913.

I note that he was subletting a house on the farm to a Robert Woods. That reverted to John Woods in 1902.

The position in 1921 was that plot 6a was ?reps of John Woods?, plot 6b (house only) was Patrick Woods and plot 7 was Bernard Woods.

All of the above properties had been purchased with a government mortgage under the Land Act in 1909.

Griffiths Valuation for 1862 shows plot 6 to have been tenanted by Joseph Woods. (John?s father?). It changed to John in 1874 suggesting Joseph died around that time. There?s a death registered in Irvinestown on 25.8.1873 for a Joseph Woods aged 80, that fits.

You can see plot 6 easily enough on the Griffiths maps. It?s on the minor road from Pettigoe to Castlederg. Known as Scraghey Rd, at least for part of the way. Inisclin is about 2 or 3 miles along that road from Pettigoe. You would best enquire locally for specific directions to the townland. And you might need a townland map to trace the precise property today. (Local studies section at Enniskillen Library should be able to give you a copy).

Looking at plot 6 today on Google earth, the old farm buildings seem to be down. There?s a couple of new buildings nearby that look to be barns or similar agricultural properties. However the track up to where the farmhouse once stood looks to be passable.

The death for Ellen Woods on 28.2.1904 registered in Irvinestown that Roger has identified might be worth looking at.

The death that I would start with for John was registered on 28.10.1910.

You can view the death certificates on-line for ?2 each on the GRONI site. Use the search death registrations option. https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk
