McCarthy and Shanahan family from Limerick City

I assume you have heard that the National Library will be placing the RC parish registers online next summer for free searching. At that time, you can go through the Limerick city parishes to see if you can find Teresa's baptism. Roots only has an 1860 (which I assume is too late with an 1875 marriage) and an 1852 record in St. Michaels church but the father was not James.

Sand men worked on the River Shannon in boats called sand cots. They harvested sand from the Shannon River mostly for use in the building trade.

I've a Collins ancestor from Askeaton, Limerick. Maybe I'll see that county one day!

Patrick Shanahan, Sandman, (born c1822 died 21 Nov 1870) and his wife Bridget Connell (born c1822 died 29 Jun 1879) are buried in Mount Saint Lawrence.  I have six tentative children for them:  

• Mary Shanahan born 23 Apr 1838
• Denis Shanahan born 01 Nov 1839
• Catherine Shanahan born 16 May 1842
• Ellen Shanahan born 17 Jul 1847
• John Shanahan born 17 Jun 1850 (married Teresa McCarthy 16 Jun 1875) both also buried Mt. St. Lawrence
• Michael Shanahan born 17 Apr 1854 (married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Quilligan 1874 in Scariff, Co Clare) both also buried Mt. St. Lawrence Cemetery

Made an error in original post.  Teresa McCarthy was the daughter of THOMAS McCARTHY, Coachman not James McCarthy as originally posted!  One of the witnesses at her marriage to John Shanahan was a James McCarthy (possibly a brother?)  Other witness at the wedding was Kate Gleeson.  Teresa's address at the time of her marriage was The Square (St John's).  Teresa and John were married at the RC Cathedral.  

Any help in locating the maiden name of Teresa's mother would be greatly appreciated!

Finding records that include the full name of Witnesess is impressive.  Are they from local parishes or a commercial supplier?

I've purchased several records from RootsIreland, which gave witnesses and sponsors by only surname (with possible OCR errors) or with first initial only and surname - never the full name. Must vary with county?

We've also an original of an1870s marriage certificate from Camus-juxta-Morne. The detail in that very old certificate surpasses the meagre data obtainable from online digitised databases - which do cost money!

For this reason, it will be interesting to see the form NLI uses when releasing the RC Parish records online.  Scans of the documents with Name-Date indexing is preferable for researching than OCR to fit a basic database with minimal fields.

Sometimes check-characters are reported as incorrect but the message was still posted.
