  • Betty:

www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free irish government site which has Dublin church records. I looked for Eleanor Tallon. The closest record was in 1849. You may want to check out the site.

  • Did your Eleanor marry in South Dublin in the 2nd quarter on 1884 - if so do you have a marriage cert for her already ?

Her father's name and occupation should help in the search.

Baldoyle is in north county Dublin outside the area covered by the IrishGenealogy website, and since your Eleanor was born before the start of civil records a search for a possible baptism will be required for her. Transcripts for Baldoyle Catholic records are available on RootsIreland, but a quick search of the index based on just her name didn't show any promising matches.

EDIT - sorry, cross posting over Roger again!!

  • you probably already have this but just in case - a baptism of Mary Esther Fitzgerald Taffe in St. Mary's , Haddington Rd (RC) on 4 February 1889. Parents are George W E F Taaffe and Eleanor Tallon.

Place of residence for the family is 63 Percy Place.

For reference some posts on RootsChat of someone named Ann researchng the same family - Re: marrige George Taaffe and Eleanor Tallon

Added : George W.E. Taaffe shows up in Kilmainham prison records in 1896 His address is given as "CULLENSWOOD AVENAL", probably a reference to Cullenswood Ave, in Ranelagh

  • Thank you Rodger and Shane.

Eleanor is a mystery to me she said her father was Edward Tallon and was a Gentleman, she said she was from  South Co Dublin. yes I have tried the regular genealogy sites, I have the same information you have.

    Thank you both.

  • If Eleanor was from South County Dublin, then that would rule out Baldoyle, as it's located in north Co. Dublin. I see several people named Tallon in Baldoyle on 1911, and just over 150 others scattered around the county, they appear to be fairly evenly distributed between north and south county and city.

There are about 90 Tallon entries on Griffith's valuation, dated around early 1850s for the Dublin area, majority of these are either in city districts or north county Dublin, the only entries for south south county are some in Rathcoole, south west Co. Dublin, all with the name William, so possibly all the same person, he may lease several properties, or be a lessor. Not everyone is included on Griffth's but a Gentleman is usually someone who would hold property in his own name and be included ... although Eleanor may have slightly over stated her father's occupation. Catholic records for the area around Rathcoole are included om the free IrishGenealogy website under Saggart (the parish is sometimes listed as Saggart, Rathcoole, and Newcastle)

I didn't spot George and Eleanor on the census return when I had a quick look yesterday, but now see them in 1901 at a boarding house at Lower Ormond Quay in 1901, George and accountant age 33, and Eleanor age 28, Catholic and both born 'Dublin Co.'  I dont see any children with them in 1901 .... I presume there were others, e.g. your ancestor sometime after Mary (1889), have you located the family on the 1911 return ?

Is there anything else that might provide a clue on on the marriage cert - e.g. witness names, residences of the bride and groom, groom's occupation ?

I suspect that Eleanor was probably baptised in a parish where the records are not available online, or maybe even one that doesn't have records for the 1860s.

  • I wonder how accurate Eleanor was with the details she gave, either for her marriage or her place of birth...

There's a Will Calendar entry for an Edward Tallon who died in 1874. He was a publican from Baldoyle, not usually classified as a gentleman, and not in South Co. Dublin,  but might be worth keeping a note of, in case you come across additional evidence. The executor listed is a Christopher Tallon, provision dealer.

There are several possible children listed to this Edward, all Baldoyle RC - four that I see between 1852 and 1866, two sons, two daughters, but no Ellen, Eleanor or similar.

There are just eight deaths for the name Edward Tallon around Ireland between the start of civil records and 1901, so if your Edward didn't die before 1864 he coudl be one of these. One of the deaths corresponds to that publican, leaving just the one in 1888 that could relate to South Co. Dublin. The district of South Dublin covers south Dublin city , but also parts of south west county Dublin, and includes as part of it Clondalkin, Saggart, Rathcoole etc..so might be worth considering

If no promising leads turn up over the next couple of months then the next potential source to keep in mind is the Catholic Parish Registers due to be made available online by the National Library during next year. These will be in the form of images, so you will have to scan through these as you would a microfilm and can be difficult to read, but cover most of the parishes in Dublin. Luckily not a big county, so not as many parishes as it's larger neighbours!

  • Hello Shane, I am sure there is a story with Eleanor, the reason I was looking at Baldoyle was because my cousin said that was where the Tallons were from. I have searched everywhere, but no Eleanor.

My grandfather Joseph S F Taaffe is named on the 1901 census on the same page as his mother Eleanor and as a visitor at a house in Howth with people named Johnson.  the head of the family was Ronald Johnson. I think that he was visiting there because the women may have been related to the Tallons.

The Taaffes were Church of Ireland but George converted when one of his children was baptised, my cousin did mention that the family were publicans and something about a Ship Master ?.

I will keep looking like you said theParish registers will be on line soon maybe then I will find something

Thank you and Happy new Year
