Hi I'm from Australia and trying to trace family beginnings back to Ireland.
In particular I'm after information about Edward Power and his wife who I believe was a Mary Ryan. What we know about the Irish Power family is limited to one of their sons a Captain Patrick Power who was born in Co wexford circa 1842. He was a master mariner operating sailing vessels up and down the New South Wales coast (Australia) until March 1890 when his schooner "The Agnes" was shipwrecked in a gale off the Brunswick River Heads.
We believe his father Edward was a stonemason and as far as we know neither he nor his wife Mary Ryan left Ireland. When Patrick Power came to Australia we don't know, although as he was a mariner, he may have worked his passage "down under" as a seaman. We believe he may also have had a brother (also a mariner) named James Power.
Any clues would be greatly appreciated

Hi Pablo
Have you had a look at rootsireland to see if there are any records of the family there? It is a pay site, but familysearch is also a viable option in the meantime
Let us know if you learn anything new
Best wishes and apologies for the delay in getting back to you

My name is Anthony Patrick Power. I am a second generation Australian and reside in Perth, Western Australia. My grandfather was William Power and he was born in Wexford on the 16th of October 1858. His father was John Power Stonemason as shown on his marriage certificate in Perth in 1891
He was a seafaring man and jumped ship at Fremantle in Western Australia sometime in the eighteen eighties. Because of this there are no official records of his entry into Australia. He did however, put roots down in Fremantle, married in 1891 and had several children, one being my father, Vincent Paul Power. He left Fremantle on a ship in 1914 when my father was only ten years old, never to be heard of again. He left many grandchildren and great grandchildren and we are all curious to know what happened to him. His father is shown on his marriage certificate as John Power, Stonemason. Assuming that there were large families back them we are certain that he would have had many siblings. I am visiting Wexford in September of this year (2011) and would appreciate if you in some way publish this letter in the hope that there is a Power family connection, even from the scant information provided. Perhaps I could even unearth some Power family cousins. My email address is Anthony.power7@bigpond.com. Thank you Tony Power 2 Burges Street Noranda Western

Hi Tony.... Apologies for delay in responding although I don't know that I have that much more to add which is of any use. We believe Captain Patrick Power's parents were Edward Power and Mary Ryan. Edward was according to documents a stonemason. There is conjecture about whether Patrick was born in Waterford or Wexford as at different times he gave different information. Likewise his date of birth was apparently "flexible" depending on what it was needed for. Patrick and our William may well be related possibly as cousins but I can't provide any evidence of this. Obviously mariners ran in the family.
