  • Hi Tari

I didn't have much luck with finding your people on www.rootsireland.ie/ (subscription site)

The only birth / baptism record I found was of William:

http://Name: William Boyd Date of Birth: Date of Baptism: 13-Sep-1835 Address: Gortmore Parish/District: DRUMRAGH Gender: Male County TYRONE Father: John Boyd Mother: Sarah Unknown Occupation: Labourer

As you can see the family's address is Gortmore and the parish DRUMRAGH.

No luck for either Boyd or Lytle in the Tithe Applotments or the early Irish Censuses (both free online) or findmypastireland!

There are 99 Boyds in Tyrone in Griffiths Valuation (free) but none in Drumragh!

If you haven't already done so you might like to have a look on PRONI (free).

If you choose the name search and try Boyd Tyrone you'll get 32 of the early Boyds - no mention of Drumragh however.

Another look found this one as I wonder whether Drumragh was at some time in another county?

http://Name: John Boyd Date of Birth: 26-Dec-1801 Date of Baptism: 1-Jan-0 Address: Parish/District: TYRONE DITCHES Gender: Male County ARMAGH Denomination: Presbyterian Father: William Boyd Mother:

Could Tyrone Ditches have been interpreted as co Tyrone rather than parish?

  • Bless you Col! I have found the parish.  It's Longfield West, Curraghamulkin.  Sarah was listed there in Griffith's in 1848.  My husband's cousin has found John Boyde listed in the Tithe Applotments 1823-1827, he was listed in 1826 in Curraghamulkin, age 21. There was also a William Boyd listed in Griffith's just a few household's away from Sarah in 1848.  That could be John's father, or perhaps a brother.

It's likely that you have found William's birth record and I do thank you for that.  We will likely never find where he was killed and buried in New York.  It's possible that Sarah may have been visiting a relative, or perhaps they went there for a brief time for a job for John.

Do you think Ditches could mean District? I did find "Ireland Topographical Dictionary 1837" and I've seen ditches mentioned in that, literally as a ditch, so I'm not sure.

I couldn't get the links above to work and I've not had much luck with PRONI. Everything that I see on there is just an index and it says I can't access them unless I visit with my ID and register.  I haven't had much to chance to explore it further yet.

My next question would be, how do I find out if there are churches or cemeteries in or near Curraghamulkin? If I go there, will I be able to find parish records or are they all at PRONI? We are planning a trip over within the next few months. Would I need to make an appointment to visit PRONI?  Will they allow a non-citizen access?

Thank you so much for your response.  We truly appreciate your efforts.

    Tari
