Hello ,

I’ve pretty much hit a brick wall with my research. The main issue is that the name I’m researching is Ryan . According to my tree , I’ve got 3 gt gt gt grandparents  named Ryan from the Kilcommon area or nearby.

Owen Ryan b. 1851-54 , m 1879 to Mgt Flannery in Murroe. It’s possible that his parents were Owen Ryan and Bgt Kennedy.

I think these Ryans were Ryan Owens , with descendants living in Shanbally.

Next I have an Edmond Ryan b. 1866 , Knocknakilla , m. 1899 to Mgt O’Grady in Rearcross. These were Ryan  Dubhs.

Its possible his parents were a Wiliam Ryan and a Bridget Ryan , who married in in 1850. Bridget Ryan was from Cummer and these Ryans were known

as Ryan  Childers or Chibbers.

Bridget Ryan married to William Ryan had 3 boys (Larry,David,Edmond) and 3 girls Ellen( m. Mackey ) , Bdgt (m. Lysaght ),Honora (m. O’Brien)

I do have a Rootsireland account but its proving impossible to figure out one Ryan from another.

For example searching for a Bridget Ryan b. Circa 1820 in Kilcommon , I get 16 possible matches.

I wonder if these names are familiar to anyone ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Tom Ryan

  • Hi Jay,

Thank you for your message. The Ryans of Watertown are indeed relatives of mine.I'll look into the Honora connection in more detail.

For some reason your jilajay2007 ID stands out to me.

I've got trees up on Ancestry and Myheritage and have just started using DNA analysis (FTDNA and Gedmatch) , not sure if it was a match on one of these.

You can email me at trtomryan1@gmail.com if you wish to discuss further.

    Kind regards,

    Tom Ryan

  • Tom,   Though the family I'm researching lived mostly in Coumnageeha (West of /  1 townland removed from Upperchurch village), there is a possible connection to a John Ryan who resided in Kilcommon at the time of his Aug, 1847 Upperchurch marriage to Catherine "Kitty" Bourke.  I initially thought that couple might be my GG-grandparents, as I had found an 1867 immigrant ship passenger manifest (transcript) for them and a number of children including a Denis Ryan, who I thought might be my great-grandfather.

Subsequently, as I could never find a baptismal record for a Denis Ryan born to that couple (though I found  the baptisms of 9 of their children), and as I learned other facts, I surmised that they instead were possibly other kin with whom Denis had been emigrating.

Anyway, I have the marriage transcript & birth cert's of the John Ryan / Catherine Burke family, the immigrant ship transcription, and 1870 & 1880 US Census records for them,   if these are of any use.  Only one Upperchurch baptismal record includes an address, and that one (1865) is "Balliboy" ... a bit over a mile W of Upperchurch. Their whereabouts between 1847 & 1865 are unknown.

Again, I'm not sure if there's a direct relationship between the aforementioned Ryan/Bourke family and the John Ryan/ Mary Ryan couple who I now think are my gg grandparents, though I suspect there might be one.
