You mention the family was from Co. Leitrim. What information do you have which points to that county? Noonan is more of a Co. Cork and Limerick name and is also found in other counties in the Griffiths Valuation but not in Co. Leitrim. The 1901 census only has one person in Co. Leitrim with the surname Noonan and he was born in Co.Longford.

I also checked the civil birth index records for Ellen Noonan in 1872 and ther were four records but none in Co. Leitrim.

Hi Roger, Thank you for responding so quickly. I am basing my search on secondhand information. First there was some scuttlebut in my family that they came from Leitrim, but I cannot verify that. Second, I found an Ellen "Nellie" Noonan on a family tree in Ancestry that said she was born in Leitrim in 1872. I was able to piece together the fact that Ellen had to be the sister of Patrick, who is my great grandfather. I know he emigrated to New York City and my grandfather, James Patrick, who was born in 1899 in the Bronx, NYC. I think Patrick emigrated in 1886 and I have narrowed down the ship. I think he was on the City of Chicago out of Liverpool/Queensland. Do you think I should post to another board to see if I can track him down?

I don't think your Noonans were from Leitrim. Ancestry data can be inaccurate at times.

There were no civil birth records for a Patrick Noonan from 1864-1958 in Co. Leitrim. The 20 for 1864-1866 are primarily in Cork, Limerick and Tipperary. Same fact pattern for Ellen Noonan.

Do you have the death records for either Patrick or Ellen? Are parent names shown?

Supposedly Ellen Noonan's parents were Gnu Noonan and Katherine McLoughlin with a possible date of 1845. I have an email into the curator of this family tree to see where and how he got this information. Ellen supposedly was born in Leitrim in 1872.
