My great grandfather, Patrick John McCarthy, was born in Cork on 2 November 1849.  He enlisted in the British Army in 1867 and his enlistment papers says that he was born in the Parish of St Johns (I think - it's not easy to read) 'in or near the town of Cork in the County of Cork'.  Can anyone help me identify where this is more precisely, please?  I know that his father was called Michael but I can't find out any more information about him at the moment.

There is a St. John the Baptist church in Ovens in the western suburbs of Cork City. The church goes back to 1831. http://www.corkandross.org/parishes.jsp?parishID=51

I can't find a Catholic St. Johns church in Cork city. Looks like there was a Church of Ireland church at one time.

www.irishgenealogy.ie has records for the Ovens church. This is a free Irish government site.
