My great garandfather, Thomas Kelleher b. 1829, resided in Drumtarriff ca. 1845. I believe the area was also known as Garaveasoge. His father was also Thomas and his mother was Catherine (nee Linehan). He emigrated to the USA ca. 1850, with his mother and a younger sister, Mary. He had been a school teacher or master in Ireland. I actually have his hand written school books (all mathematics), detailing his progressive studies over a period of about ten years. The earliest lessons have him located at Fairy Hill and the later lessons have him situated at Garraveasoge. Both are fairly close to or in Kanturk. He had an older sister, Margaret, who married Jeremiah Corkery and then emigrated to Canada, also ca. 1850.
The information above has all been gleaned from family letters and documents that have survived four generations in America. I have searched many genealogical websites and have been unable to find any further information from the Irish side of the pond. I am curious to learn all that I can.

James:
The records for Dromtarriff RC church start in 1832 which is a little late for Thomas. The Dromtarriff records are on www.irishgenealogy.ie which is a free Irish government site. Dromtarriff is actually in the Diocese of Kerry so you have to search the Kerry records. I was able to locate the baptismal record for Mary.
The spelling of the townland is Garraveasoge.

Roger,
Thank you. I had found this record as well. I have been able to place Thomas in Garaveasoge and Fairy Hill which are one in the same, in Griffiths. I'll need to keep searching and hope additional documents may surface in the future.
Regards,
Jim

Hi Jim: I have an interest in Dromtariffe due to nearby connections in Killeen (Boherbue). I will forward your post to a few Cork Genealogy Society members (who are also XO members) as your information is very interesting! Would you please create an Ancestor profile for the XO Chronicles (at the top of the page)? Please let me know if you have any difficulties doing so. Kind regards, Jane
