I am looking for more information on Michael Conway who arrived on Ellis Island in October of 1850. His estimated birthdate is 1839 in Ireland. He married Cathrine McNulty once he settled in the US and lived in Baltimore, Maryland. Does anyone know where else I can look to find out which part of Ireland he originally came from?

Ellis Island did not open until 1892 and the prior entry point was Castle Garden which started in 1855. Not sure the name of the entry point in NYC prior to 1855. See links below.

Conway is a common surname in Ireland and is found in many counties.

I checked the Roots Ireland indexes and they have 13 Michael Conways baptized in 1839 and a good number of churches do not have records back to 1839 and are not in Roots.

We would need to know his parents names in order to check further. Do you have his death record which may or may not have his parents names?

  • Perhaps I can help you eliminate one of the Michael Conways listed on Roots.  My gt. grandfather and my gt.gt. grandfather are both Michael Conways from Kingstown (Dun Loghaire) and from what I could see on a church record in Dublin my gt gt gt grandfather Michael Conway was from Wicklow before Kingtown.  To the best of my knowledge, the only member of the Conways who came to the states was my grandfather, George Conway who was born in 1886.  I don't know if this helps, but maybe you can eliminate some of the Michael Conways from the list.

  • Michael,

Wow! Thank you for reaching out already. My mistake- I did mean Castle Garden. The links you supplied were helpful. I found a record on CastleGarden.org that matches with the only information I've found in my searches on Ancestry.com I've attached the image of it. I knew beforehand that Michael came over in 1850 and was 11 years old. This confirms that.

Unfortunately, this is my dead end. All I see on Ancestry.com for Michael Conway (in relation to my family tree) is the United States Census documents which indicate that he lived in Baltimore, MD, married Cathrine McNulty (Conway), and had 9 children (Mary, Charles, Cathrine, Florence, Josephine- my gr. gr. gr. gr. grandmother-, Joseph, Blanche, Alice, and Eugene).

So, I have no idea what Michael's parents' names are or what county they came from in Ireland. I'll keep looking. Thank you again!

  • I've often found info on the website from the Mormons....Family Search Genealogy.....they have a lot of the info that's in the National Library in Dublin.  My local library here in New York can get the microfilm from Utah to see the entire entry if I find something I think looks promising.  It's worth a try, especially for records of people that ended up in the USA.

    Happy Hunting!
