I am a new member. I have traced my mother's family as far back as 1805/6 to James Gorman. He was married to Hannah Kenny and they had nine children. They moved to Lancashire in England some time in the 1840's where my Great Grandfather Martin was born.
James Gorman and Hannah Kenny lived in Charlville, I am uncertain as to the Parish their children would have been registered with. I do not know who Hannah's parents were or where she was born, there is a suggestion that James was from Roscommon. James was born in 1805, Hannah in 1806.
Their children travelled to America and Australia and I believe at least one remained in Ireland.
I would be very grateful if anyone could assist me.

Peter:
You may want to go to www.rootsireland.ie and register to search their indexes. I searched from 1822-1842 and there are six baptismal records in the Charleville RC church for Gorman children with parents James and Johanna. Roots is a subscription site to purchase the transcriptions of church records. You may want to just find the names of the children and the year of baptism. Later this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to place all RC parish registers online for free searching. You could then review the registers to see the actual church registery.

You mention Johanna - is this a common version of Hannah? Six children is probably right as one record give a birth registration as Maya although that my be a misreading of the record. Two other children were born in Bickerstaff, Lancashire.
The cost of registration to rootsireland is a little too much, I shall wait until later !
Thanks for your assistance. I am still wanting the parents of James Gorman and Hannah Kenny but keep drawing a blank, however, I shall persist.
Best regards

Peter:
The Charlesville data for baptisms on Roots starts in 1827. There may be earlier data available but you will have to wait for the NLI.
I did have time to figure out the six children as follows:
Honora 1829
Hanna 1833
Catherine 1835
Michael 1837
Ellen 1840
Patrick 1842.
Johanna and Hanna are interchangeable in my experience.

I am sure I replied to your message but can't find it, I am sorry if this is the case.
I have been unable to find Honora in any of the correlated family trees I have found but the other children all appear.
I am really grateful for your help as it confirms some of the information I have gathered. Going further back than James and Johanna is still a stumbling block as I can not find if they had any siblings or who their parents were.
They both lived through difficult and turbulent times of which I know some of the history but not the affects it had on everyday life and in spite of which my family survived. They thrived in America and Australia, it is a pity such capable people were not allowed to do so in their own country.

Peter:
It is possible that Honora died young.
