Holyoke MA, USA

Hello:

I would like to find information about my great-great grandfather, Patrick Gormley.  According to his 1855 U.S. naturalization record, he came from Omagh in Tyrone. I am sorry, but I do not know the name of the Parish, so I just chose one from the list of those in Omagh.  He stated that he was born in March of 1814 and that he had arrived in Boston on September 26, 1850.

The 1850 emmigration date is consistent with the fact that in the 1900 U.S. census, he reported that he had been in the U.S for 50 years.

Patrick had a son in Boston in 1856.  Sometime thereafter, they went to Connecticut, and in the 1880 U.S. census, Patrick is shown as married to Mary Crowe, and their son was with them.  Perhaps Patrick and Mary were married in Boston between 1850 and 1855, but I do not know that, and I plan to look for such a marriage record.  I have not been able to find any other record for his wife Mary.

According to his death certificate, his father's name was also Patrick.

I am hoping that the above Boston arrival date might allow for searching of passenger lists, for instance, to see if Mary (or another relative) may have been with Patrick.

I plan to visit Tyrone for the first time in June.

I will appreciate advice as to the possibility of finding any more information about Patrick or his family in Omagh and how I might go about obtaining such information.

Sincerely,

Robert Gormley Judge

Omagh is in the civil parish of Drumragh and the related RC parish is also Drumragh. Unfortunately, records for Drumragh RC parish do not begin until 1846. I did check the Roots Ireland indexes and they do not have any Patrick Gormley baptismal records from 1809-1819 in Co. Tyrone.

Regarding ship records, I'm not aware of any Irish records in that era. Here is the link to the library in Omagh. I would suggest that you contact them and see if they are aware of any ship records. Perhaps he left from Derry (Londonderry at that time). https://www.librariesni.org.uk/Libraries/Pages/Omagh-Library.aspx

Also, have you checked Ancestry or other records in Boston regarding ship arrivals in 1850 to see if you can find Patrick coming in?

The 1859 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Drumragh parish shows a good number of Gormley entries including two Patricks. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/tyrone/drumragh.htm

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Dear Roger:

Thank you for your quick and helpful response.

I have sent a message to the library, as you suggsted.

Yes, on Ancestry.com I found a "Pat Gormly" on a ship named Parliament that arrived from Liverpool in Boston on June 29, 1850.  That is different than the date than my ancestor Patrick Gormley provided, which was September 26, 1850, but it is close.

Thank you for the infomration from Griffiths!

    Greetings from Omagh

    Hi Robert,

I was interested in seeing your post. I have Gormley families from Omagh and surrounding areas in my tree. My fathers sister was married to a Michael Gormley and my wifes wider family circle also had Gormleys. It is difficult to find connections when you go back so far, and this is true with all the research I have been involved in. I will have a good look at what I have and get back to you.
