My great-great grandmother was Anastasia Cottrell (Cotterill), whose father was Patrick (on her marriage certificate his occupation is given as farmer). She was married a Patrick Mulherin in Oldham, England in 1882, aged 26, so must have been born around 1856. There are various bits of story wafting around in our family regarding her: these are some of them...

The Cotterells were apparantly quite well-to-do, involved with horses, and also teachers. Anastasia married a sea-captain, a Paul (?) Moore, and as a result was expelled from the family, who cut off all links. She definitely moved to Oldham where she was a domestic servant. My great-grandmother Mary and her sister Matilda were born there, and when their father died, Mary came back briefly to Kilkenny (I think Thomastown) to be with her grandparents. but returned to Oldham. She talked of her grandparents living in some sort of 'castle' but this may have been her interpretation of a better home than the one she was used to in England.

There is some story about the girls being summonsed to Liverpool to 'sign away their inheritance' sometime c. 1920.

I so want to find out about her, and would like to know just where in Kilkenny she came from. If anyone can help, I'd be really happy!

  • I think I found the baptismal record for Anastasia in the Ballyhale RC church records. Ballyhale is the RC parish directly to the southwest of Thomastown.

I checked the 1849 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Kilkenny. The only Patrick Cooterell (or variant spelling) lived in Kilmacshane townland in Inishtioge civil parish. Patrick the father of Anastasia may not have been leasing land in 1849.

  • That is wonderful and I thank you for your efforts. Geographically, would it make sense for her to be baptised in Ballyhale if they lived at Inishtioge? I did have a hunch about Inishtioge. Would I be able to get a copy of the certificate, and do you think there is anywhere else I can search to find out further information?

So much thanks for your help.

  • I think the answer is no. If you lived in Inistioge then the RC parish would have been Inishtioge. Looking at my reference book with maps, Inishtioge RC parish is to the east of Thomastown and Ballyhale is southwest of Thomastown. You may be able to find a map online which shows the locations of the various RC parishes in Kilkenny.

Regarding the baptismal record, there would be know certificate available. Civil registration did not start until 1864. What I sent you was a transcription that Roots Ireland had for the actual baptismal record.

I did not mention this earlier but on July 8th the National Library of Ireland is placing all RC parish registers online for free searching. Ballyhale parish is in the Diocese of Ossory. Once the system is up you will be able to view the actual parish register where the baptism was recorded. There will be a high demand for this new feature so you may want to wait a couple weeks before trying to find the Ballyhale register.

  • This is great! I'm coming to Ireland for the first time this summer, so will visit Ballyhale. Very useful that the records are coming online; I shall access them when the initial rush has died down. Thank you.
