Hi,
I am trying desperately to connect my ggmother Rosina Grace GALLAGHER b circa 1869 County Donegal, to family in Ireland. Her parents (recorded on her Australian Marriage certificate, Victoria, 1889) were Edward GALLAGHER, farmer and Sarah MCHUGH/MCCUE.
I have ben unable to find any birth certificate for her or marriage for her parents.
I have, however, found records for 3 children with parents of the same name in the Gortahork Baptisimal Records.
They are Cecilia b 3 march, 1851, Cashelhill. Witnesses James & Sussana Gallagher.
Edmund Gallagher b 10 sept 1854, Cashelhill. Witnesses Michael McCarry and Mabia Brogan
Sarah Gallagher b 1856, Cashel. Godparents James Gallagher and Catherine Gallagher. James & Catherine were found in Cashel Tithe Applotments.
I have found an Edward Gallagher in records from the minutes of evidence given before the select committee into destiution on Gweedore & Cloughaneely, 1857-1858.
An Edward Gallagher from Cashel, is also listed for illegally fishing at Lackragh River in Dunfanaghy Pety Sessions nov 1851-dec 1855.
I have searched for death records for Edward and Sarah Gallagher.
Sarah Gallagher died 24 june 1878, aged 50, Cashel, farmer's wife
Edward Gallagher died 23 oct 1895 aged 80, Cashel, widower, farmer.
The informant for Edward d 1895 was his dau in law Mary - there was only one Mary Gallagher in Cashel, her marriage states she was Mary McGowan, married to Edward Gallagher, son of Edward, on 11 apr 1888.
In 1883 I have found in Ships Passenger Lists a ship the 'Roslin Castle' leaving Plymouth and arriving Sydney 1st March, 1883 both a Annie GALLAGHER, 19 years and a Grace GALLAGHER, aged 15 years. Their father was Edward GALLAGHER, Donegal, RC. There was a sister Sarah already living in Sydney when they arrived as domestic servants.
Rosina married in Carlton, Victoria, in 1889 my ggfather Robert SHARP from Shetland. He was a merchant seaman and died on the HMHS Llandovery Castle as boatswain in 27th June, 1918, off Fastnet, Ireland.
Robina Eleanor b 1890, Port Melbourne
Robert James b 1894, North Melbourne
Sarah Grace b 1893, North Melbourne
David b 1895, North Melbourne.
.David and Sarah both died as infants from diarrhoea and vomiting, and are buried in Victoria.
I have had searches done for me in Ireland, to no avail.
Kindest Regards,
Pam Eustice nee SHARP pomeus13@gmail.com
I would really like to find
Rosina and Robert had 4 children.

The civil parish of Tullaghobegley is in the RC parish of Gortahork. Their baptism records start in 1849 but their marriages don’t start till 1861. So that may explain why you have been unable to find a marriage for Edward and Sarah. If they married in that parish, around 1850, then sadly no records exist.
Griffiths Valuation for Cashel in Tullaghobegley in 1857 lists Edward Gallagher as farming plot 5 which was a farmhouse, outbuildings and 16 acres of land. He also had a one twelfth share in plot 14 another farm. Next door to Edward Gallagher on plot 6 was Edward senior, (which normally indicates that was his father) with another 16 acre farm. Those farms today are about a mile south of Gortahork village.
There were numerous other Gallaghers in the townland suggesting they may be relatives.
5 Gallagher households in Cashel in 1901:

You say you can’t find Rosina’s birth c 1869. A birth in Cashel should have been registered in Dunfanaghy. There’s a Rose Gallagher birth registered there in 1868, another in 1869 and a Rose Ann Gallagher in 1866. Have you investigated those?

Hi Elwyn,
Thankyou for your suggestions.
I have been through Ancestry site and gone through Select Births and Marriages, Ireland, with no success.
I feel strongly that the family in Cashel are my family, but I have nothing to prove or disprove it.
I have been focusing mostly on this area, as I have no other possibilities.
The Gortahork Baptisimal records which gives 3 children with parents Edward Gallagher and Sarah McHugh/McCue,( that is the same name as the parents of Rosina), but it does not cover the time frame of Rosina's birth.
I wish I could confirm or dispute this family from my search'

Hi,
Does anyone have a connection to the GALLAGHER family in Cashel, Dunlewy, Tullaghobegley?
I have an Edward Gallagher marrying a Mary McGowan on 11th april, 1888, in Dunfanaghy.
I am hoping to discover who Edward's parents were
Hopefully, Edward Gallagher and Sarah McHugh.
How do I go about getting a transcript of their wedding?
Kindest Regards,
Pam Eustice

Pam:
Below is a transcript of the civil marriage record from Roots Ireland. Civil marriage records only show the names of the fathers and Edward Gallagher was the father of Edward Gallagher.

Hi Roger,
THANKYOU so much for that. Is their any likelihood that the mother's name may be registered anywhere.?
I found the marriage listed on irish genealogy.ie but only names of bride and groom.
I also have no knowledge of Irelands geography, which confuses me and I'm not sure whether I am going forwards or backwards in my research.
My ggmother was Rosina Grace GALLAGHER, daughter of Edward GALLAGHER and Sarah McHugh born circa 1869, County Donegal.
Birth records on irish genealogy i.e site do not give mother's names.
THANKING you again,
Kindest Regards,
Pam Eustice. South Australia

Pam:
The mothers name for Edward would be on the baptismal record or any civil birth record 1864 or later.
I think that your Rosina was actually born in either late 1861, 1862 or 1863. The Gortahork RC baptismal records have a ten year gap from April 1861 until November 1871. If she was born in 1864 or later, there should be a civil birth record. All of the civil birth records that Elwyn mentions do not have the father as Edward/Edmond/Edmund. Based on the lack of civil records, I'm speculating a birth prior to 1864 and in the gap period of the Gortahork records.
Likely the 1854 baptismal record is for the Edward who married Mary McGowan. The marriage record shows Cashelhill which matches the baptismal records.
One other side comment. You mention finding records on irishgenealogy.ie That site does not have Donegal records so you must have found the info on another site.

THANKYOU for that Roger.
I have searched so many places for so long it is becoming increasingly difficult to remember where I saw what.
I WILL HAVE TO RECORD WHERE I HAVE FOUND INFO in future.
Now for a sounding board.
I will only find the mother's name of either baptisimal records (which do not cover 1861-1871) or civil records.
(which I have been unclucky with to date)
I did have a search done by Ulster Ancestry in 2008 for (1868,1869), with no luck. (Public Records 3
I also had a search done by Eneclann for Births for Rose Gallagher in Ireland in 1868 and Rosina Gallagher in 1869. Rosina was born to parents Hugh Gallagher and Sarah McCarren. Years searched 1866-70.
Where can I go to from here to try and verify that my ggmother Rosina Grace is actually a daughter of Edward Sr. and sister to Edward b 1854 (Husband to Mary).
I have Griffiths Valuation 1857 to verify this family as living in Cashel., and 1901 census.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Kindest Regards, Pam

Pam:
I am not aware of any other source that can confirm that Rosina is the daughter of Edward Sr. and sister to Edward Jr.
