Hello and it's my first day in message boards so please bear with me! Looking for connections to family of My great grandfather Thomas Joseph Carroll born abt 1873 in French Park county Roscommon. Immigrated to US 1889 and passed on May 1907 in Chicago at age 37 leaving a wife (Mary E Ford) and five children one of which was James my grandfather. Have found no imformation on Thomas' parents or siblings from Ireland and hoping someone can help with this journey? Thanks and best wishes! Kevin

Kevin:
There are a number of Thomas Carroll baptismal/birth records around 1873. There were five civil births in the Frenchpark district from 1868 to 1874. Do you have Thomas" death record which might show his parents. As an alternative, do you know the name of his oldest son?

Roger, thanks for your early resonse! My great grandfather Thomas Joseph Carroll died at age 35 in Chicago, and i do have his death certificate. Unfortunately no family names are noted. His children who were all born in Chicago were as follows, Thomas 1902, Mary 1903, William 1904, John 1906, James 1907. James is my grandfather. None of the above are still living. On Thomas' gravestone in Chicago reads " born: French Park, Co. Roscommon abt 1872". He immigrated in 1889 at age 16, born i think 1873 abt. 1900 census indicates birth year of 1873, age 27 years.
I believe you and i communicated at length prior to my trip to Co. Roscommon in 2008, and you were of great assistance at that time. I have since neglected my search, as i came up empty on that trip but am steadfast now about tracing our genealogy beyond my Great grandfather. Would love to find his parents, siblings etc. BTW i was in Chicago last week, and the parish that he and my Great grandmother were married in, had there records destroyed for two year period including 1900 year of their marriage so no records there. I have uploaded here a search provided by Roscommon Genealogy which sort of put on my brakes. I keep hitting a wall, but will persevere! Godspeed! Kevin Carroll -
Kevin:
Since the oldest son was Thomas, I made the assumption that the grandfather was also Thomas. So I searched for Thomas Carroll birth records with a father Thoams in the Frenchpark area around 1873. I found two possible records which you should use as leads. See below.

Roger this is very encouraging and follows the attachment I sent you with original reply showing 5 possibilities it would make sense the father name is Thomas also do you have any suggestions I might take from the U.S. To further the search? I now have Thomas marriage certificate here I Chicago says on certificate that as of 2/1900 which was date of marriage he was 27 years old. If DOB was Nov 1872 as second record above shows than in Feb 1900 that Thomas is still 27 as indicated on marriage record this could be it! His tombstone also says born abt 1872 died May 30 1907 roger assuming that Thomas and Brigid are his granparents and this is him born November 1872 are their any records at the Parish which would verify I am on right path? kevin
Blessings to you

Kevin:
I could not locate the baptismal record and it was not on Roots as I recall so the records for 1872 may be missing. In any event, the register if it does exist would not have any more info then what is on the civil record.
Have you looked on Ancestry for a family tree that someone else has posted that has your Thomas Carroll?
Another alternative for consideration although not a panacea is autosomal DNA testing. Perhaps you might match someone who has more information on your Carroll family.

Roger thanks again for quick reply. When you refer to "roots" and "register" i assume your referring to some records search locally in Ireland? If so, that would be all i could hope to achieve through our personal connection i guess. I have a worldwide subscription for Ancestry.com, but has come up empty. My only hope was to find a way to link Thomas to one of the possible Parent sets you sent me earlier, but not sure how i can do that? DNA seems like a longshot but i may be more open to it now! Take care Kevin Carroll

Kevin:
Roots is Roots Ireland which is a data base available via subscription that has records from churches in a good number of counties in Ireland.
Each RC parish (other denominations also) kept their baptismal and marriage records on a "register" These records are very valuable particularly for the years prior to the beginning of civil registration in 1864. There were two RC churches in your area of interest: one in Frenchpark and one in Fairymount. The Fairymount register has an 11 year gap from 1864-1875 and I believe your Carrolls were likely caught up in the "gap". Fortunately, there is a civil record so not having the register for that period does not affect your search. FYI Roots Ireland built there data base by transcribing the records on parish registers.

Roger. I was able to locate a record of baptism for my grandfather James Joseph Carroll son of Thomas Joseph Carroll and one of the Godparents listed is a James Joseph Carroll as well whom I believe would have been his brother? The baptism occurred June 9, 1907 in st Mel's church Chicago which no longer exists. I have also confirmed Thomas is indeed the oldest son of Thomas one of 4 boys my grandfather being youngest. In order the sons are Thomas William John and James with one daughter Mary.
Not sure if this would help in my search. Short of DNA testing I'm at a roadblock again. Thx Kevin

Hello again Kevin!
Based on the fact that Thomas had a brother James, I searched on Roots Ireland for a James Carroll record with a mother Bridget Giblin or Bridget Forde. I could not find a record for a James Carroll with a mother bridget Forde but did find a James Carroll with mother Bridget Giblin (and father Thomas Carroll). Again this presumes the father's name was Thomas. Thomas Carroll and Bridget Giblin had at least seven children. You have the Thomas info above and below are records for James and five other siblings. The family lived in Buckhill townland in Tibohine (Frenchpark) civil parish. I checked the 1901 census for Buckhill and there were about four Carroll families. I don't see Thomas and Bridget so they either had died or were living elsewhere. There is a John Carroll in Buckhill who may be a brother of the elder Thomas. I did find a 32 year old John Carroll with his wife and possibly this is the 1868 John below. There is a link below for the census record for John.

Roger, this could defintely be the connection to Thomas' parents. You'll never believe what i found today in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, Springfield,IL............My great grandfathers obituary! If you recall, or not, i started a conversation with you back in 2008 it wastnt Ireland XO but another one. Today is the best day for me in terms of all my searching. Ive attached it here. Most of the siblings are the same as what you showed above, so too much coincicdence not to be, however not sure if Martin didnt make it, or who Della is. perhaps Mary in the obit is Margaret. At any rate i'm thrilled to be moving forward now and very grateful for your post today.

Kevin:
Good news! The 2008 conversation was likely related to my 1901 census web site www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census

Hi Kevin
I've just found this excellent site, and just this week confirmed that my Carroll ancestors came from the Leitrim townland in this parish. My 2x great grandparents were Michael Carroll (1831 to 1891) and Bridget Egan (1835 to 1912 married in 1851, and their children Margaret (1853) John (1857) Patrick(1859) Michael (1861) Bridget (1865) Thomas (1867) and Charles (1871). My great grandfather became an RIC policeman in 1882 and was posted to Fermanagh.
I do not know about the previous generation though there is a John Carroll in nearby Clo(o)nard. If we are related it must be back to that or an earlier generatins
My autosomnal DNA is on the FTDNA site so I would be very interested if you have had yours profiled
Best wishes
