My great-great grandfather was John Hussey of Castlequarter Ballineanig Ballyferriter Co Kerry. He is listed in Griffith Valuation returns of 1852. His brother Thomas Hussey was living in Reasc Ballyferriter at that time. These two places are in the Parish of Marhin. The Landlord was Clarissa/Clara Hussey, an aunt of Samual Hussey that wrote and published a book on the landlord/tenant system in 1907. Clarissa Hussey was a strict Landlord and she donated money to the church in Dingle. She was buried there when she died.

I cannot find the Hussey family in Castlequarter prior to this date. They are not listed in the Religious Census of 1834 or the Tithe Books of 1828. There is a Mauce and Thomas Hussey in Kilmalkedar on the Religious Census of 1834. I am not sure if they are related. I wonder if there is a connection with Clarissa Hussey. Her father was Sean/John Hussey and they were catholics. Sean is mentioned in the book 'Cead Bliain 1871-1971' as helping Moriarty of Ballineanig.

Sorry, I am a bit long winded but I wanted to furnish you with as much information as I can. Your help would be much appriciated.

Regards

Anne Campbell

  • Anne,

Miss Clara Hussey was a local businesswoman (wealthy) . She had a brother Peter Bodkin-Hussey who was father of Sam Hussey. There were quite a few Hsseys in the district but most lived in Dingle. I have not found or heard of any connection to Ballyferriter Hsseys but it a strong possibliity they were related. There are very few Husseys in the area at present. The Ballineanig - Castlequarter area was and is very sparcely populated.
