Just wondering if anyone in Antrim could help me, I'm trying to find information about my family has I seem to hit a brick wall, my grandfather was Thomas Anderson Baxter born 18 February 1904 in Antrim to a William John Baxter born around 1876 and Minnie mcllhatton Or it could be spelled mcllhatton they use to live at 36 legale rd or St in 1904  and I think Howard street Antrim which I found out when I managed to get my grandfathers birth certificate I think Minnie was born around 1876 but maybe wrong and she could of been known as Mary as when I found my grandfather and great grandfather in England census  William John Baxters wife was called Mary at that time so was this his 2nd wife or was this Minnie and from there I'm losted and can't find their mothers or fathers so if anyone can help me with any bit of information not matter how big or small it is I would be great full. I've been doing my family tree now going on for nearly 30 years and the Baxters are the only side I've got no where with if you can help in anyway that would make my day I promised my late mother I wouldn't give up on finding our family. THANKYOU

  • Maureen,

There’s a marriage between William Baxter and Minnie McElhatton registered in Omagh, Co Tyrone on 4.1.1896. You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

The surnames McIlhatton and McElhatton are interchangeable in Ireland. Just a different way of spelling the same name. Likewise the names Minnie and Mary can be interchangeable.

    I noted the following additional children to parents Baxter/McIlhatton 1896 – 1908:

    David 6.3.1897 Omagh

    Rebecca 19.9.1900 Omagh

    George 1.11.1901 Belfast

There was also William born in Glasgow c 1898, going by the 1901 census. So it looks to me as though they left Omagh between 1897 and 1899 to work in Scotland. They then returned to Omagh for a short while before moving to Belfast between 19.9.1900 (Rebecca’s birth) and 18.1.1901 (Rebecca’s death – see below).

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Windsor_Ward/Howard_Street_South/976052/

Rebecca is missing from the 1901 census which suggests she had died. There is a death for a Rebecca Baxter, registered in Belfast on 18.1.1901.

Looking at the 1911 census, I see that William was born in Rosemount, in the city of Londonderry, and his wife Mary in Omagh. They had been married 16 years and had 7 children, 1 of which had died. So all that information suggests he was still married to his original wife.

William and Minnie’s marriage certificate should contain their fathers’ names and that in turn, together with their places of birth should enable you to find them in birth records (on the GRONI site). That in turn may lead to their siblings births and their parents marriage. (Birth registration started in Ireland in 1864. Non RC marriages were recorded from April 1845 onwards).

I looked for William Baxter’s birth certificate in Scotland. There were 5 people of that name born in Glasgow in 1898/99. You can view them on the Scotlandspeople site. It’ll cost you about £1.20 each to view them.
