My GG Grandfather was Michael J Brehany, born 02FEB1816, Athleague, County Roscommon. He emmigrated to the US and settled in Galena, Illinois sometime around 1840. Galena was a mining town at that time, but he was a grocer by trade there . His brother Augistin(e) and sister Mary joined him in Galena.
Any hints on taking this information further would really be appreciated.

Hi Janet,
Thank you very much for your query on Ireland Reaching Out. Try checking shipping records if you know the date or name of the ship he might have emigrated on. Detailed information is generally taken at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure.
The name Brehany could be actually spelled 'Brehony', which is more common. If you have difficulty tracing your ancestor, it is worth checking this spelling as well.
Also try checking land records such as the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) for more detailed information about where he and his family lived.
Hope this is of some help. I know that there are still Brehony's living in Roscommon, so hopefully someone from the area will be able to help you further.
Kind regards,
Sinead Cooney

My great-grandmother was Mary Brehany Burke who was from Roscommon but was born later -- about 1869 and her father was Thomas. She lived in NY and NJ and died in Ramsey, NJ. She suposedly had a brother Michael, as well as a brother James and sister Delia. Perhaps there is a connection between your Michael and my GG grandfather, Thomas?

Janet,
Not sure if your still active on this board, but if so, drop me a line. I belive your g3 grandfather and mine were acquaintances in Galena, IL, and I'd like to compare notes. Earlier today I posted a request for information that you can check out for additional details.
