Hello, my research has led me to Ballynakill and the townland (?) of Roughan as the addrss in 1901 of Bridget Dyer and Farell Murphy. The both died in the next few years ( from the death records). Their son John went to New York at age 14. I have not found his birth record. I,did find John as an adult in a Us census, married, with at least eight children, of whom five made it to adulthood. I recall hearing both Murphy and County Sligo as a child and would love to know more and whether there were other chilldren or family at the time, or even now. Thank you for your interest, and consideration.

Barbara:
I looked at the Roots Ireland indexes and could not find anyJohn Murphy baptismal records from 1840-1860 where the father was Farrell/Farell. I also looked at the 1858. ( The RC parish would be Riverstown for Ballynakill civil parish). There were no Farrell/Farell Murphys listed in Rooghan but there were a John, James and Martin Murphy.

What was the approximate year of birth for John based on the US census record that you located?

Hello, Roger, and thank you for investigating. This is troubling. I found Bridget and Farell in the 1901 Irish Census in the National Archives of Ireland: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Sligo/Drumcolumb/Roogh…
Neither ever went to America. I have their names from research that was done by another family member who would have heard the names from her mother, my Great-Aunt. I never knew any of them and have not been able to contact them. The Aunt passed decades ago and my first cousin passed about two years ago.
I have their information through another cousin, who is not a Murphya, but a Welsh. The son John, whom I could not find except in US censuses. There is a family story about rumrunning with Kennedys but I imagine that's fairly common lore. I have been searching throught the emails from the famly member who put me onto this. All I can find is the names and that John was born 1864 and arrived at age 14.
I chose County Sligo because of the very little conversation about all this, I did remember County Sligo and Murphy as pieces of information.

It's been awhile. Things happen.
In any case, I still have not conclusively found John Murphy, born approximately 1864, arriving in AMerica about 1878. I have since discovered Griffiths and find his parents, listed in the 1901 census. They each pass on in the next two years. I also find in the same 1901 census and valuation, several other Murphy families. This is in Rooghan. As I do not know if he had siblings, I cannot determine relationships of the people listed, which are 45-50 years past his own birth.
So, starting over, I am still looking for John's birth or baptism.
