I'm seeking records/information on Michael & John Summers (Somers, Sommers) who emmigrated to Canada in 1848 as a part of the Fitzwilliams "Surplus People" movement.
The arrived in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada in spring of 1848 on the ship Star. The passenger list states Newry as the source town.
Any help would be very much appreciated,
Tim Somers

Hi Tim
Do you have approximate birth years for Michael & John?
There are quite a few Wicklow birth/baptism records for Somers aroud 1827 on www.rootsireland.ie/ so you might find them there.

Col,
I have an approximates years as 1826 and 1796, respectively.
They went to Canada on the Ship Star, from New Ross as a part of the Coolattin Estate Emigration in 1848.
The family was comprised of John, Betty (Elizabeth) Michael, Mark, James, John, Thomas, Pat, Eliza, and Ally.
The had 3.5 acres & cottage (to be torn down) with a Mr. Dowse as lease agent.
Thanks,
Tim
