Hogans from Castlegregory

Dear AJ, can you tell us why you believe that Michael was a stonemason. I have found a Michael Hogan of Main St. Castlegregory who is a policeman in this record in 1860

If the father was indeed a policeman then the children might not show up in Castlegregory Church records since they may have relocated from another part of Ireland.

Do you know if the family were Catholic or Church of Ireland?

Mary Ann's death certificate listed her parents as Michael and Mary, father's occupation as stonemason. I know this may not be reliable, but as she was only 37 her husband was probably the informant and he was a school teacher in his 40s, he should have known. The news item in the local newspaper reporting her marriage in 1865 said she was the youngest daughter of the late Michael Hogan of Castlegregory. I don't know if she was Catholic, I assumed not because she married the son of an English  Wesleyan missionery, and was buried by a Wesleyan minister.

I posted 2015 about my great-grandmother Mary Ann Hogan (born about 1850) from Castlegregory, County Kerry who arrived in New Zealand in 1865 with Richard Hogan b.1847, Alice Hogan and Godfrey Hogan b.1847. The only Hogan record found there was Elizabeth Hogan who married John Brunskill in 1860 in Killiney Parish. I was unsure how this fitted so left it, there didn't seem to be any birth records available. I believe they may have been Church of Ireland, in NZ Mary Ann married the son of a Wesleyan missionary in a Wesleyan Church. 

Now I find I have a DNA connection to descendants of George Patrick Hogan born in Adare, Limerick (according to his army record, parents Michael Hogan and Alice Browne) and his sister Esther Hogan, all these people ended up in NZ, Esther came on the same ship as John and Elizabeth Brunskill and 3 small children, and I am beginning to believe that perhaps they may all be siblings (or cousins perhaps) all born in Adare, Limerick, the younger ones having moved to Castlegregory before emigrating, as newspaper reports in NZ have said Mary Ann, Richard and Esther were from there, not that they were born there. How can I find records that will confirm these dates and places, should I post this in Limerick as well?

Hi Julia, rootsireland is a fee-paying site that gives access to Church records for most counties in Ireland. I'm in it now and can find 2 Richards but both are Catholic (RC)

1848 Richard son of James Hogan & Mary Slattery St. John's RC Parish, co. Limerick

1846 Richard son of Daniel Hogan & Cath Sheedy St. John's RC Parish Co. Limerick

I can find one record for Michael Hogan & Alice Browne

1834 son Patrick born Jan 16 Adare

It would definitely be worthwhile for you to post on the Adare Civil Parish page.

However of interest also is that there is a Hogan family in Castlegregory in 1901 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kerry/Castlegregory/Fahamore__Fahamore/1408216/
