Hi All
I am looking for the Wheelers from Mountnugent area. James Wheeler, a farmer, aged 50 and Catherine Cook lived in Aughatina townland of Kilbride according to the 1821 Census.
This shows James as Whelan but has Cathrine 38, Cathrine 18, Pat 16, Anne 14, James 12 and Bartly 10 as well as a James Wheeler 20 as a servant. There is also Bartly Wheeler aged 40 married to Anne, 38 with Mary 10 & Anne 7 family in the area. Could be a brother.
James and Bartholomew came to Victoria in 1840's. James married Mary Daly c 1832 but she died because of childbirth on the "Abberton" in 1844 on their way. James came over with the other children Pat 13 yrs, Bartholomew 9, Thomas 7, Rose 5.
Any info would be good
Cheers
John

Hi John,
Have you tried looking at the Church records that are available for the area? Most Catholic records are held locally so it may be an idea to write to the parish priest for possible assistance. You check what records are available there on the Irish Times website here:
For Church of Ireland records check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.
Family Search also have some birth and marriage records from the area online. You can search here:
You could also try searching for records at Roots Ireland, however please be aware that you have to pay to use this website. http://rootsireland.ie/
Have you tried looking in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century? There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
It may be an idea to look into James and Bartholomew?s emigration also as generally more information was given at the port of arrival. . The Public Record Office of Victoria has good online databases of settlers at www.prov.vic.gov.au
Some other websites which you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
