Hi All, trying to trace the Freeman and Johnston families.
From Griffiths Valuation of about 1865 James Freeman lived in Lambeg, and was a Cart Man. Prior to this he had lived in Glenmore. Married Jane Goudy (Gowdy?).
One of his sons (there may have been more) was William Freeman who was born in 1844 in Lambeg. In 1865 he married Mary Johnston in Dunmurry Presbyterian Church, Drumbeg. By 1865 he had moved to Glenmore, and died in Connsbrook Avenue, Belfast in 1898. William was described as a Millwright, then later as an Engine Installer, Mary was described as a servant.
Any help or information appreciated.

Hi Arthur,
Thank you for your message.
You could try looking in church records for more information. Presbyterian registers are held in three main locations: in local custody
in the Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI) http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
at the Presbyterian Historical Society http://www.presbyterianhistoryireland.com in Belfast.
PRONI has microfilm copies of almost all registers in Northern Ireland and also lists of records held by the Presbyterian Historical Society.
Also, have you tried looking in civil records? Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

You could also try searching the 1901/1911 census records to see if there were any family still in the area at the time. These are available here:

Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
