I'm trying to locate the ancestors of Joseph Alexander Deering who married Lizzie Madill at Drum in May 1891. His father is listed as Matthew?? - a farmer. Can anyone confirm that his father was Matthew (writing very indistinct) and has anyone got any information about the family please?

Hello Joy,
As you seem to have the marriage date for Joseph, you could get the civil copy of the record to see what was the name of his father.
I found Joseph A in the 1901 census in Gortnavinny Co Monaghan with his wife Elizabeth and 6 children.
I found him in the 1911 census in the same house with his wife Elizabeth and their 10 children. He has now turned to farming.
None of his sons bears the name Matthew but his eldest son was called William??
There was a record on rootsireland for a william deering in 1756 in Monaghan, so the name Deering goes way back there.
Don't know if this is of any use to you,
Kind regards,

Hello Joy,
Do you have the church marriage record or the civil marriage record?

Joy,
I can't find a marriage record for them online at rootsireland. It's unusual because the marriage is so late in the 19th century. Can you scan the record you have to this forum?
If Joseph's father was a farmer, then it is worth looking at the Griffith Valuation on www.askaboutireland.ie
I did a quick search for a Mathew or William Deering. The name Deering is very prevalent in Co Kildare .
I found on www.roots ireland a baptismal record for a Joseph Deering born in 1858 in Co Kildare. There is a possibility that he is not from Monaghan?Fermanagh, but his bride was. Usually people got married in the bride's parish.
I see from the 1911 census of Ireland (more accurate than 1901) that he was born approx 1859?
Have you looked at the census?
Joy, when you reply can you do so through this forum so that all the volunteers (who may have a different angle) can see your replies. Scroll down to the box that says Leave a Reply and type your text there.

Hello Joy,
I downloaded the cert that you sent and showed it to my husband and daughter. I never mentioned the word Matthew or William. They both immediately said it was William and I have to agree.
There is a record for a William Deering on the Griffith Valuation record for Clones on the border of Monaghan and Fermanagh. These were records of people or leased or rented land.
When you go to www.rootsireland.ie site click on the county genealogy centres on left of page.
This will bring you to a map of Ireland, click on Co. Monaghan.
this will take you to the Monaghan heritage site.
When you scroll down to the bottom of the page, click on list of sources.
This will show you what RC, CoI, Presbyterian records are online. YOu may have to contact a church directly if you can't find the parish records there.

Hello Joy,
In the Clogh Church of Ireland (MIC1/288) it was found dates of 3 births to William and Isabella Deering who lived at Derryheanlish (to the North of Roslea. In Co. Fermanagh, but on the border with Co. Monaghan)
1. James Corry Deering (who married Eleanor Henderson) 13 Feb 1853
2. John Francis Deering 15 April 1855
3. Joseph Alexander Deering 4 September 1858
I am presently working on Eleanor (Henderson) Deering's family and realized that James had a brother Joseph Alexander and thought this may hopefully be some help to you.
