Greetings,
I am looking for any help finding information about my Great Grandfather - Patrick Mallon. He was born about 1864 in Co. Tyrone. He lists his father as Charles Mallon on his marriage certificate, also born in Ireland and he was an agricultural labourer. Patrick left Ireland prior to 1887 and settled in Thornaby, Yorkshire. He married there in 1887 to an Ellen Lynch. I was also born in Thornaby but my parents immigrated to Canada in 1958. That is where I live now, trying to do this research from afar. I had found the parish records for Arboe parish in Salt Lake city, I found who I believed were my Great-Great grandparents - Charles Mallon & Bridget Dorian, but they don't appear to have had a child named Patrick?? Charles and "Biddy" were the names of Patrick's parents and they were from Arboe, according to family lore, but I can find no proof of that.
Thanks again for any help

Hi Ann, thanks for your message.
Have you tried searching the Griffith's Valuation for any record of Charles and "Biddy" in the Arboe Parish? If you could find them in he records at least it would be confirmation that they were from the parish. The Griffith's Valuation was a land survey pertaining to Ireland between 1848 and 1864. You can search the records here:

Perhaps you should try and get in contact with the Arboe parish directly to find out what exactly they have on record and to see if you can find any certs that will connect Charles Mallon and Bridget Dorian to Patrick.
Here is a link for the PArish of Arboes online contact page:

I hope that this help,
Kind regards,

Hi Ann
My wife and her sister are researching their grandfather also called Patrick Mallon and from Ardboe.
They have found information from the 1901 census about a Patrick Mellon (37), blastfurnace labourer, married to Ellen (33), living with 6 children, Thomas 10, Bridget 8, Charles 7, Cornelius 5, Patrick J. 3, Gerard A. 1, in 8 Durham Street, Thornaby and with sister-in law Margaret Lynch, 18
The family name is often spelled in early Ardboe and Ballinderry records as Mellon.
They think this must be your great grandfather and would like to correspond directly with you as there may possibly be a link with their grandfather.
Could you please send an email to bridgetdoug-mallon$yahoo.co.uk.
This is a disposable email address to avoid spammers who harvest from public forums,
Please replace the $ with @ when copying to your email account.I will reply with a real email address and then my wife and her sister will send you the
documents they have found.Aidan Dougan

My gg grandmother was Ellen Mallon from the parish of Arboe b. 1835, daughter of John and Mary Mallon. Her last residence was Killygonland when she applied for her pension in 1908.
The Irish name for Mallon is O'Mellan so is often spelled Mellon.

The marriage register (Catholic) of Ardboe parish includes the following marriage:
31 March 1859
Charles Mallan and Bridget Dorrian
Witnesses: Hugh Dorrian and James Hagan
The baptismal register contains seven baptisms of children of this couple between 1860 and 1875 (see attached). There is no Patrick, but missing entries are not altogether unusual in the Ardboe registers. The baptisms are evenly spaced, save for an almost four-year gap between January 1860 and November 1863. It is feasible that Patrick may have been born around the end of 1861, beginning of 1862. It is not possible to verify this suggestion, as there was State registration prior to 1864.
The year 1864 would appear to be ruled out as Patrick’s birth year as Mary Anne (born 10 November 1863) survived, as did Bernard (born 12 June 1865).
Mary Anne can be found with her parents Charles and Bridget in the 1901 census: Tyrone/Killycolpy/Aghacolumb/house 22
Bernard married Margaret Lynch in Thornaby Tuesday 19 July 1910, according to a note added to his baptismal entry.
