I am looking for any information on the parents of my great great grandfather John Crawford. He married Isabella McCoy at St Mark's Parish Church of Ireland, Newtownsaville in the town land Dunbiggan December 3, 1889. His father's name was listed James, John was listed as 21 years of age or older, and his residence was listed as Lislea.

  • Hi Michael, thanks for your message.

I did a search of the townland Dunbriggan, and found that it is in the Civil parish of Clogher. This should help when trying to find information.

Have you tried looking at the land records of Ireland pertaining to the 19th century? There are two sets of records that are available: The Tithe Applotment Books dating from 1823 to 1838 and the Griffith's Valuation dating from 1848 to 1864. These records are considered important for Irish genealogy as they are census substitutes for the period as census records prior to 1901 have been destroyed. The information in these is generally listed according to parish.

You can browse the records at the following websites:

    Tithe Applotment: http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    and

    Griffith's Valuation: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Other websites that may be of use to you during your search are the following:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

    and

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

I hope these websites are of some help to you. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello,

Thank you for your response. Since I have posted this I have looked through the 1860 Griffith Valuation of Tyrone and do believe I found John's father, James, with a sizable farm in the townland Tatnadaveny in the Parish of Clogher. Tatnadaveny is a townland next to Lislea. Lislea is the townland residence of John at the time of his marriage. John was a farm laborer and likely worked on his father's farm in the neighboring townland or learned his farming skills from his father.
