It does not appear that the Castlederg RC parish records are available on Roots Ireland. I looked on the National Library of Ireland index and the records are in the Diocese of Derry under Ardstraw West. The records start in the 1840s and go to 1880. The NLI is placing these records online on July 8th for free searching.

I also checked the 1901 and 1911 census records for Kilclean. Not sure these are the correct records for your family since the 1901 shows a Joseph and Patrick.

  • Hello from Australia

I have your William McDade (McDevitt) and his wife Catherine Coyle on my family tree as a first cousin to my great grandmother Eleanor McDevitt/McDade born Kilclean c1834 and married to James Gallen of Garvagh Blane.

William's father Edward (wife's name not known) died 1871 in Kilclean and was a brother to my Eleanor's father William ( died c 1850) whose wife was Eleanor (maiden name not known) died in 1864 and my great grandfather was the informant at her death.

I have the following children for William and Catherine:

Eleanor 1864-1896 (Died Chicago - Married Edward Gannon)

Margaret 1866-1950 (Died Chicago - Married John Harrison)

    Eliza 1869-?

Patrick 1871-1937 (Died Castlederg, Ireland - never married as far as I can find)

Mary 1874-1921 (Died Chicago - Married Thomas Gallagher)

    Catherine 1874-?

    James 1877-?

    William 1881-?

Joseph 1885-? (Joseph is the beneficiary of Patrick's will and resident in Scotland in 1937).

I have a tree on Ancestry which may be of help - it is Somers Family Tree - and I will now try to track down the remaining children you have mentioned!

    Kind regards

    Hilary (Somers)

  • Hi!  William McDevitt and Catherine Coyle are my 3rd great grandparents.  They married in Doneyloop, County Donegal, Ireland (just across the border from Tyrone) on 3 May 1859.

Their 5th child:  Margaret (Maggie) McDevitt married John Harrison, 28 Aug 1888, at St. Pius  V church in Chicago are my 2nd great grandparents.

You have it a bit incorrect ... Mary 1874-1921 (Died Chicago - Married Thomas Gallagher) ... this Mary was born 6 Mar 1861 in Kilclean, and the rest is fine.  She is the eldest child.

The 2nd child is William, born 8 May 1863 in Kilclean.

The 3rd child is Eleanor, born 19 Mar 1864 in Kilclean --- but she is NOT the one to marry Edward Francis Gannon .... that was a younger sister Ellen.

The 4th is Edward, born 4 May 1865 in Kilclean.

The 5th is Margaret (from above) born 1 Aug 1866 in Kilclean.

The 6th is Ellen, born 27 Oct 1867 in Kilclean, married Edward Francis Gannon on 19 Jun 1889 at St. Pius  V church in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois

The 7th is Elizabeth, born 13 Jan 1869 in Kilclean.

The 8th is Patrick, born 25 May 1871 in Kilclean and died 6 Apr 1937 in Castlederg Union Hospital, County Tyrone ... and appears not to have married or had kids.

The 9th is Catherine (Kate), born 6 Jul 1874 in Kilclean, died in 1955 probably in Kansas City, married Frank J. Cunningham 28 May 1896 in Denver, Colorado.  They had one kid in Denver, two in Illinois, and then 6 in Kansas City, Wyandotte Co., Kansas

The 10th is James, born 23 Sep 1877 and died 26 Jun 1899 in Kilclean, no marriage or kids.

The 11th is William John, born 21 Jan 1881 in Kilclean, married Margaret Ann (Annie) CATTERSON in 1906 in Ireland.

So four of the sisters did immigrant, 3 to Chicago, one to Kansas.  I think the son Edward also immigrated, but not proven.

My Ancestry tree is not well named:
