Greetings from Australia!

I am trying to obtain details of my grandfather's date and place of birth. Various certificates indicate he was born approximately February or March 1882, in Carlow, Ireland, to Charles Byrne and Mary Byrne, maiden name Carroll. However, the birth certificate we hold is for a Patrick Byrne born 1 August 1879 to a Peter and Maria Byrne, nee Carroll. I ssume we have somehow received the wrong certificate, and would be grateful for any help in obtaining the correct date of birth of my grandfather.

Cheers, and thanks

Mike

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I took a quick look at Roots Ireland for 1877-1887 for Carlow and the only Patrick Byrne baptism with a mother with surname Carroll was the 1879 record that you have. I will take a look at the civil birth index records a little later and get back to you.

  • Hi Brian

I too was looking at the same time as Roger and could only come up with the following baptisms:

Patrick (1871), James (1875), Charles (1877), Peter (1878), William (1882), Joseph (1884), Terence (1880) - no sign of Patrick Joseph.

We'll see if Roger comes back with info from the civil birth index though I am not optimistic as he was not mentioned on rootsireland.ie. I fear that his birth was not registered and his baptism not entered on the register. Fingers crossed though!

    Best wishes

There are five Patrick Byrne civil birth index records in Co. Carlow in 1882 so that is not helpful at this time. I checked out the family that Clare locate in the 1901 census and they were living in Constable Hill in Hacketstown parish which is no where near Agha parish. Are your Byrne's from Agha since you posted in that parish?

Any other clues? When did your Patrick leave for Australia?

  • Thank you both so much for your help.

I posted in the Agha parish as I assumed my grandfather came from the town of Carlow. However, it is quite possible the “Carlow, Ireland” mentioned on his marriage certificate refers to County Carlow, not to the town itself.

Roger, you mentioned that there are five Patrick Byrne civil birth index registrations for Co Carlow for 1882. Is it possible to ascertain if one of these is a child of the Charles and Mary Byrne referred to in the 1901 census link you provided? Or if any of the five has Charles and Mary Byrne listed as his parents?

I have no other clues at this stage such as date of travel to Australia, but will be doing some more research into this.

Thanks again Clare and Roger, I really appreciate your help.

No. The civil birth index records do not show the parents names. You would have to contact the General Register Office to have them check the records looking a record that had Charles and Mary as parents. If you decide to go that way, I would have to give you the five index records. They normally charge around four euros per record copy. Not sure what they would charge for your search.  Also, theis family had a William in 1882 so Patrick would have to have been a twin. Also there was an 1871 Patrick in this family. Of course this Patrick could have died young.

    Let me know.

  • Thanks Roger

Would you please give me the five index records, and I will contact the General Register Office.

    Cheers

Go to this link https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx   print out the birth form and fill it out to the best of your ability. Include the info from the five records below. Write a note and explain that you are looking for an 1882 birth record for a Patrick Byrne in Co. Carlow with parents Charles Byrne and Mary Carroll and refer to the five possible index records. If one of the five is for your ancestor, they should make a copy. You can ask them to e-mail the copy to you.

You have to mail the request to GRO (address is provided when you print the form). I provide my credit card number and never had any issues.
