Hello I am looking at the parish registers for 'Pallasgreen and Templebredon' and there is a place of birth for the John FRANKLIN and Honora SLATTERY family in the 1860s and 1870s called "Lough" Does anyone know what location this is? For what it is worth the family was in Brackyle in 1860 before they were in Lough, and these Franklins seem to have been Oola a generation earlier. Thanks for any insights.

One of our volunteers, Christina, is having problems getting into the site so she sent me this e-mail which relates to your query.

    Hi  Roger,

I  cannot  log  in  and  I  am  trying  to  answer  the  query  of  12th  Oct  re  Lough.

Its Leugh  like  the  name  Luke  its  in  the  civil  parish  of  Doon  near  Glengar.  I  was  born  in  this  area  and  heard   people talking  about  this  townland.  Its  very  near  the  area  in  the  query.  Many  thanks.

  • Hello and thank you Christina and Roger,

I had come to the conclusion, based on this family being in Brackyle on the 1901 census and Coolnapisha in the 1911, that "Lough Coolnapisha" was the location meant in the Pallasgrean & Templebredon parish registers by "Lough." I never would have thought of "Leugh" townland, which I will definitely investigate.

  • Hi

Lough is a area between Brachile and Coolnapisha John Franklin lived in this area in the 50s when I was a child. He was a man in his sixries at the time. The farm was sold after his death.

  • Definitely, Lough is between Brackyle and Coolnapisha, Malachy Ryan (Lar) and his family lived there with his wife Mary and their children have this listed as their place of birth/baptism. It doesn't appear in later records may be included with Coolnapisha. That seems to be the case with this family.

  • I've been researching the Ryan Darbys from Coolnapisha. After looking at the records, I concluded that Lough is Coolnapisha. There is no Lough in the Tithe records (1826), and Malachy Ryan lived in Coolnapisha then, yet in his children's records, "Lough" is listed. Maybe it was a micro townland, but it never caught on.

Google Maps has the location as "Lough Coolnapisha", which seems to back this up.
